Hold on, we have an assistant? So you mean the club aren't heading in to the new season with only a Head Coach and no back room team like many predicted?

Looking at his CV he looks a bloody good choice too. I suppose taking your time and have some patience does sometimes result in getting the best man for the job.

Sounds like a very good and surprisingly progressive appointment.

Sounds good. The Dundee United link is a terrific endorsement given their youth system in recent times. Perhaps Ryan Gauld will finally come to use afterall

Good positive step for me, just need to get some players and fill in the rest of the backroom staff.

Yes very happy with this. I think that his knowledge of the spanish market (cheaper skill players) might come in handy as well.

Positive news, only heard good things about the guy, apparently set up his own coaching academy at 18 after injury cut his playing career short and he has gone from strength to strength ever since. Now lets go get some decent players "over the line"

Not convinced guy seems to young. How can a 28 year old be old enough to be a Premier League assistant manager, hope the guy proves me wrong but sounds like another cheap option.

I have heard nothing but good things about him so delighted with this. His age doesn't bother me as an assistant. If he's good enough he is old enough - a mentality I hope he helps the club accept with our young players instead of getting midfielders to cover right back or centre-back when we have youngsters who actually play that role.

I've hardly posted on a 'football' thread in weeks. It has been a choice of clutching names out of the air or accepting the sense of doom about the place. Finally we seem to have something that is an actual bit of progress. Let's hope this is the start of things falling into place. I am in the camp of those who think it's too early to judge the summer based on the fact that McLaren has only been here a few weeks. However, that position gets harder to justify as each unproductive days go by, so this is a positive step in the right direction.

The former assistant manager at Valencia and was coach at Dundee whilst they were producing fairly good youngsters! Certainly not a cheap option and in fact my be the long term successor to SM!

What a superb signing this should be!

Not only did he coach the Dundee Academy at 22 years old he has also been at Valencia for 4 years. Rather have an up and coming coach rather than others who we've been associated with.
Do he count as one over the line?

Getting Cathro on the backroom staff is a decent statement of intent for the future of the club. His track record and highly tipped status should prove an attraction to young players in terms of getting talent in, and by all accounts he has a technically-minded attacking philosophy. So exciting times!

Please just say we have a similarly progressive list of signings for the playing staff on the way.

Friend of mine saw a recent interview with him on Spanish football, very sound communicator and well-travelled, dedicated and forward thinking professional. I don't think the fans disagree with some of NUFC's "continuation" policy, it's how it's put in place historically that hasn't worked!! If you have McClaren for 5 years, Cathro then takes over in an ideal world it should in theory work very well. Where the idiots got it wrong was thinking Pards-Carver was a good idea!!!!!! Not only that, but giving neither Pards/Carver any fcking players doesn't help.

There's a balance - the players need to be good enough and of the coaches choosing to deliver football that allows patience on the terraces.

If we want to talk ourselves into a state of optimistic delirium, we could also point out that the first we heard of it was when he was signed. Therefore, the deluded optimist would conclude, we may have a whole raft of unrumoured players just waiting to be announced . . .

Well, 2 days notice we got, with both The Star (tentatively) and Lee Ryder (weirdly) claiming on the 23rd he'd be approached.

Here's my contribution to optimistic delirium - two very high praise articles on Mr Cathro:

You're welcome, happy Thursday everybody! Everyone now ready for the Friday 11am announcement, presumably featuring either Charlie Austin or Rozzazinho?

This is really good news. Very happy with that indeed. Our coaching set up at least looks like a big upgrade on what we were having to put up with.

Rationale is clearly that he'll be able to work some magic and bring through more youngsters into the first team, so saving and making money for Mike when they're sold on á la Ryan Gauld.
