Thought of a thread where you can, if it’s true, coin and use the expression “ I was there” with either fond or sad memories of preferably football games involving the Toon but it doesn’t have to be limited to Toon games. To get things started and to give a what I mean example I was there when “Ned Kelly” scored one of the most important goals ever for Newcastle saving us from the ignominy of what was then called the Third Division. No disrespect to other Clubs but whilst we have had plenty seasons in the Second Division we have never ever been in the Third Division. Can you imagine not being able to say that? I can still remember the sheer delirium that erupted in the crowd that day when Ned scored. Some players such as Liam O’Brien or Emre have earned free drinks in Newcastle for life by scoring winners against the Mackems but not many others have earned that right by the scoring of just one goal not against the Mackems, Ned is one such player. It’s hard to set the scene but the game against Portsmouth was one of those games where time stopped still but also flew by. We huffed and we puffed but we seemed incapable of blowing the Portsmouth defence down. That was until The noise that day was unbelievable especially for a crowd of 26000; although talking to people afterwards would have suggested that the turnstile count was wrong and Health and Safety regulations breached and that the crowd was probably closer to 500,000. The noise at the goal being scored and the relief combined with joy experienced still makes this one of my favourite all time goals. So, it’s that sort of memory that this thread is looking for, get cracking.
I was there aged 14 with my late dad. The atmosphere was electric. The feeling of injustice was immense. The whole ground stood up and chanting "it's a fix". I remember it as if it was yesterday. Trelford Mills
"No disrespect to other Clubs but whilst we have had plenty seasons in the Second Division we have never ever been in the Third Division. Can you imagine not being able to say that?" no can't imagine it I was there for the second leg
The best atmospere at any match I’ve ever been to. The best game Tino ever played for us. The best game Gillespie ever played for us. The best referee I ever saw. And then Daglish decided to dismantle the team????
Norwich city at Home on a Wednesday night 1986 I was down in Weymouth buying a machine for my business (cost me a lot of money - £8k in them days was a lot of my money) and missed the train coming out of Kings Cross by 5mins so ended up getting the National express coach home that got us into town for 11 spent 30mins on the phone to my mother half way up the motorway piling in 2p's into the phone box listening to Metro Radio commentary as we had stopped for a Service Break
I was there undercover in the Home end when we were 1-0 down at half time to the filth in Shearer’s last competitive game... then the party started in the second half...
Arsenal 3-2 when Bobby was in charge and we went top of the league and ended our London curse. Of course Uri Gellar took credit for this, but he can do 1!! Robert and lua lua changed that game!
Keegan's debut against QPR in '82. I was in the Leazes so didn't help to suck the ball into the goal.
Reminiscing about King Kev....just wonderful. I clicked on Supermac as well, that goal against Bolton in the FA Cup, incredible. And his goal against Burnley in the semi-final at Burnley. Different atmosphere at the games then fellas, a better atmosphere (bar the aggro of course).
