I would have thought that Southampton Grand Cru would have been more appropriate.

To be fair, Pompey Royal used to be a half-decent draught pint. Don't know about now or when out of a bottle, as I haven't had a pint of it in years. That Southampton Pumpkin Ale looks interesting.

EDIT: Ah, should have guessed..! Southampton, NY, USA.

Do you say that out of experience or merely because it happens to come from the city of Portsmouth?

I doubt if he's even been in a pub where they serve it. ;)

You're a bit sensitive aren't you, Lapras?....They used to sell it in The Angel in Palmeston Road and I tried a pint of it once, it wasn't to my taste but my mate seemed to like it.

Ha. Fat chance of getting anything even vaguely original or with any substance to it at SMS - Carling, Walkers crisps, and crap pasties every step of the way.

I'd like to try the Pumpkin Ale but it would have to go a long way to top Sierra Nevada Pale Ale in my humble opinion.

I've also never been in a pub where they serve Pompey Royal so can't comment!

You forgot to finish the sentence, StG. I'll do it for you.

...to avoid like the plague. ;)

I had the misfortune to drink the odd pint of keg beer [including that rubbish] in my late teens, early twenties, before it thankfully all disappeared after the re-emergence of real ales again. All I can say is, we all owe a debt of gratitude to CAMRA, and others, for their campaigns to get proper beer back in the pubs.

I believe you are mistaken sir! Whilst I agree that the keg Watneys Red barrel was a truly horrendous concoction, I do remember once as a very young man tasting a Cask incarnation which to my young and untutored palate seemed a passable pint.

Southampton, New York is worth a look on Google maps. It's completely different. I am going to be honest, I prefer our one.

You mean you actually had a pint of cask conditioned Watney's Red Barrel..? Interesting..! I thought it was a keg beer only. ;)

I remember one called Ben Truman. Occasionally, back in the 1980's, one would walk into a new pub and find no real ale, and amongst the electric pump rubbish was Ben Truman. In desperation, it was drink that or go to another pub.

Just remembered, there was also Whitbread Trophy. That was poor, but not appallingly bad.
