    ...... incompetent referees ruined it.

What are the occupational competences for a referee?

We need an NVQ level 4 award to be developed and no person should be allowed to referee a game if they fail to achieve it.

I would suggest that a very useful competence would be the ability to interpret the rules of the game correctly and to appropriately punish any player who deliberately infringes those rules.

    That's todays referee buggered then.

Hi Godders. I suppose your question is rhetorical. But you can do the course for about £75, as long as you can pass what is probably the easiest exam ever. Getting to the top, and staying there, is a little bit harder. Anyway, today's ref made one major error (should have been a second yellow but not a red) and I might suggest has waved goodbye to any chance of him refereeing in the play-offs this season. Not much use to us, I hear you say.

Anyway I sometimes wonder if some of the player's attempts to influence the referees decision actually has the opposite effect...just a little thought.

It's just ridiculous, I'm sure he'll be getting a visit from the ref's association or whatever. Two perfectly good goals ruled out also today! Shouldn't make any difference if players are requesting a card or not - deliberate hack on the edge of the box = yellow card (at least), tho having said that crowding the ref is one of my pet hates (hello Reading!). I only hope we don't become a side regularly complaining about terrible refereeing, should be able to win games like that regardless.

Lambert wouldn't have scored without the whistle going and the defender and keeper switching off, but that was a wrong decision (made by the linesman to be fair). What was the other ruled-out goal? I must have missed that!

Hines' foul should have been a red though, to not even give a yellow is just mind-boggling. And I don't think we really crowded the ref, Hammond (as captain) has every right to speak to him, which is what happened.

Godders, I'm just back from the game and my view is unchanged from that which I held at the final whistle. The ref made two poor calls today. The yellow/red card (it had to be one) and their free kick when it was clearly a mutual tug (it's legal between consenting adults) and both players needed a slap and to be sent to bed with no supper.

However, the people who lost that game today were the players of Southampton FC. I'm not getting at any of them, but we didn't create anything worthwhile when we were dominant at the start of the second half.

Not surprised you missed the other goal - Jutkiewicz 'scored' in injury time shortly after the equalizer - you like me were probably still banging your head somewhere! Offside apparently. (Didn't look it) And what do you mean Rickie wouldn't have scored?! Nah you're probably right - poor Rickie seemed desperate to score, obviously hope Saturday we'll see him fire in a few to make up for it.

Myself and my son are both referees and we watched the game, we both looked at each other when it happened and watched the replay, there was a defender coming in from Lallana's right so the player who fouled was not the last defender so no red card, BUT the challenge was from behind and intentional so therefore under the laws of the game Hines should get a yellow card, which would be 2 yellows so he gets a red.
Cant see how Referee gives a foul and a direct freekick but not card, terrible, also discussed this with other referees and every one says the same.
We all referee weekend football at local levels and our biggest problem on the parks are so called "professional referees" they dont play by the same laws as in the FA handbook, they allow swearing, if we pull someone up for the same we get they do it on tele. they allow pulling and pushing in the box, diving without yellow cards, its terrible, play to the laws not what the tele wants.

know what you mean...too much bitching on this forum hasn't helped, how some of our fans slay some of our players is unbelievable......I'm going to try to avoid football thoughts until the Coventry game and arrive at St Mary's refreshed, enthusiastic and ultimately ecstatic when we comprehensively beat Coventry.....I want to win because I like a short-term fix...but a bit of me also wants to stay in the Championship, another year of steady (re)building may lay better foundations for our foray into the PL

The trouble is that we have had a fantastic season generally, exceeding expectations. There is no guarantee that next year would be as good..other teams have discovered that. The chance of victory must be grabbed now.
I hate football because I care. I like tennis too and watched Murray lose in the Miami quarter finals and I like cricket and watched England lose badly in Pakistan. The difference is that disappointment in other sports is over in moments. Important losses for Saints leaves me at a loss...until the next game. Emotions are on a roller coaster ride at the moment. Bring on the summer.

Chin up Fran. We would have taken this 2 months ago. A win at home and we are up simple!

I do agree and referees can change the fate of a game there were maybe three or four dodgy ones last night to be fair The ball did not appear to go out of play when Ricky latched onto it ,the obvious sending off for a deliberate trip, and i am not sure their guy was offside when he scored for me the officials had a bad day. But for me the turning point was Jose fouling the guy on the edge of the box he did worry me because he had a nibble at the striker in the box just before that and i thought he was going to give away a pen
I also notice however seething inside Nigel may be he never openly is critical of officials i think he sees it as a waste of energy and it can give players excuses for any failings of there own during the game this is what makes him a great leader he always makes sure the team and the managment take responsibilty and he does not go down the whinging route he will expect things to be put right by himself and the players on sat

It was a very poor decision not to send the defender off and then to book Fonte for something that was much less. However Fonte is completely at fault, he didn't need to foul that player and we paid the price. Overall for all the posession we had we didn't have a single shot on goal of note. Boro were up for it and arguably had more to play for, we have next week to secure it but they had to win to maintain their slim playoff hopes. The Cardiff result would have boyed them in the same way as it would have deflated them had it gone the other way.

Still remain confident we will go up and think we will do it without having to win next week. Hope so anyway!

Just watched the highlights and you have nothing to complain about. The 'Boro foul was never a card because it wasn't a foul, he got the ball (still poor refereeing though, of course) and the free-kick they scored from was far from mutual tugging, Fonte was yanking away at the 'Boro player's right arm.

I think he made an honest attempt to play the ball, but caught Lallana first and the ball a very close second. A free kick was the right decision.

It shouldn't follow that because he was on a yellow card, that he should automatically get another one. If the challenge had been mistimed to a greater extent, then yes, but it was very close. If it had been against Pompey, I would still have been jolly miffed, being totally honest!

Fonte's foul was blatant cheating and deserved a yellow, no question.

I wondered that too. I've no idea what was said (shouted) between him and Lambert, but from then on the despicable wee b*stard was mouthing off at Lambo at every opportunity.
