So - if we're not going to win the league - do we go 'all out' for a cup run ? Personally, I think that that cup competitions ( except Champions League ) are treated with much disrespect by the 'big' clubs. They use any excuse to use 'unheard of' young players in their squads - to 'save' the prima donas for the PL or CL. This deprives lower league fans the chance to see these 'superstars,' in the flesh, pitted against their own team - in a hope of a cup upset --- 'Cup upset' - by that I mean the annoyance that the top PL managers feel every time their team gets to the next stage of the cup competition - because they are a distraction from the real prize, i.e. the CL. The same contempt is shown by the 'top' managers when it comes to selection for an England game -- all of a sudden a player has a muscle'strain' - and needs to miss the England match - but makes a miraculous recovery for their club game a few days later. As for Gills - well- we won't win the League, league cup, FA Cup, the Checkatrade trophy, the Dulux paint tin or egg cup - so I'm hoping for an honest performance ( preferrably without getting 'scunthorped' - and no more injuries or yellow cards.
