The story starts during the summer of 1967 and Tommy Docherty left the manager’s job at Chelsea.
City are in the Second Division and so are Rotherham United. Rotherham’s chairman had big ideas for his club and appointed Docherty as manager. His first statement quoted in the press “I’m going to get Rotherham out of this division!”
In November AD paid Rotherham £30,000 for injured centre forward John Galley – his leg in plaster for an injury I can’t remember. He regained fitness and his first start was on Saturday 16th December 1967. I was saving for forthcoming marriage so didn’t make the trip to Leeds Road and instead watched City Reserves at the Gate.
Occasionally the club announced the first team away scores during the game but on this occasion nothing until the end of the game.
But well worth waiting for; Big John Galley had scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 win. A very early Christmas present.
And at the end of the season Tommy Docherty fulfilled his promise as Rotherham were relegated!
Do you have any stories about City at Huddersfield to share with us?
