<peacedove>I Have to Return to Liverpool, confirms Pepe Reina

The Spain international -- who has two years remaining on his contract at Anfield -- spent last season on loan at Napoli but the club's financial limitations have prevented them from striking another deal for the 31-year-old.

According to The Guardian, Reina has insisted he has not spoken to boss Brendan Rodgers yet but he is tied to his contract at Anfield.

"I don't know about my future. I want to be calm about it and there are people who are working on that. I have two years left on my Liverpool contract and the situation is the same as a month ago," said the Spanish goalkeeper.

"I've not spoken to Rodgers and I don't know what they think but I have a contract and in the end that is what counts. I have to join up with Liverpool and there's nothing more I can do.

"I said goodbye to Rafa at the end of the season and he knows the conditions that exist. At the moment things are like that."

Reina made his World Cup debut in Spain's final group game against Australia.

When asked if he would like to continue in the Spain national team, he said: "Absolutely, for sure. Today I fulfilled a dream, which was to play in a World Cup. Despite the team being eliminated I have the personal satisfaction of having played and having done so with a win."

Reina recently admitted he was still hopeful of playing for Napoli again next season but manager Benitez said his side are well stocked in goal: "We don't seek a goalkeeper," Benitez said on his official website.

"Rafael, with whom I keep in touch often to monitor his progress first hand, (Mariano) Andujar and (Roberto) Colombo are sufficient guarantee in our goal."

Reina has been linked with a move to Barcelona as the Catalans were looking for cover for new arrival Marc-Andre ter Stegen. But they have just completed the expected signing of Real Sociedad goalkeeper Claudio Bravo

  3. Couldn't he just buy his self out of the contract? Seem to remember a contract ruling that said any contract that is more than two years old can be bought out  Maybe the club and player will come to a mutual agreement if a buyer cannot be found.

Ming has his problems, not sure it's a bad thing Reina coming back tbh.

Ming cost us some points this season gone, about 6 or 7. City and Chelsea being the most important, 4 points.

Another reason not to blame Gerrard.

the maths on it would work like:

2 years x 100k per week = 10.4million sterling owing to reina (pre tax)

    transfer value of 5mil?

so if lfc say said here's a free transfer f off baldie... we save 5million in effect.... however from his point of view he might well at best get 50k per week someplace as obviously he's not going to get it off napoli so options are limited.

so.... he could stand then to lose 5million taking said free transfer.

So i thnik he is bitching but in reality trying to get some sort of bid to come in. LFC would want the 5mil AND the wages gone and i'm sure pepe would like 2mil signing on fee somewhere he can work a tax dodge on and 70k per week min.

I am sure he would absolutely love arsenal at this point. they would pay him the wage he wants. Barca is now a pipe dream and there really are no other options given psg wanting loris.

It looks to me that the best solution for pepe would be to shut up and knuckle down. He feels clearly rodgers stabbed him in the back and won't be the one making the first move...

I don't see any reason for pepe to get out of lfc unless a club in say the arab coutries or spain give him the wages.... if i were that mad leicester owner i'd be sticking in a bid.

Naopli can't match the wages he's on, Benitez said so himself

This would be solved if he handed in a transfer request and accepted a much lower wage, but that's not going to happen.

He's therefore going to play the game and hope that you make him an offer that covers all or most of the shortfall to get shot.

I can't see him ever being part of your squad again personally.

yes i think so... if lfc want him gone they have to pay 50% of wages which is pointless or riena needs to accept a tax free type country like some arab nations or just plain goes and takes lower wages

At this point he's got 10.4million before tax to mind and you or i would mind that just the same wouldn't we?

  8. That or someone offers him 60%-70% of what he gets now on a five or six year deal. Makes it worth more in the long run. unlikely because of his age though.

true but money today is worth more than money tomorrow... all in all if i got a big signing on fee and 70% of wages.... well i reckon i'd move for 2mil + 70k per week if i were him <laugh>

lucky bartard has little to be whining about when you put it like that.

Sure, you'd do the same, especially if (like him) you felt like you'd been treated shoddily.

You can't afford to have him back on the books @ £100K per week sat on his arse either, so it's down to who blinks first really, but the outcome is predictable

yes but with CL football actually we probably can... that said if you add johnson swanning about and agger likely to be an expensive and not good sub as he needs sharpness... well Pepe is the easiest one to continue to push out the door.

Cost /benefit....cannot be justified. Though, Reina would be more than happy sitting on the bench on his ass.

He also saved us points in other games so swing and roundabouts as they say. Room for both as long as Reina leaves his ego at the door.

Well Chelsea now have Cech and Cortouis at the club with Cech confirming he's not leaving, obviously it can change but I can't see it happening.

Tbh to have two quality goalkeepers can only be a positive.
