One of my grandsons went to a Birthday football celebration party last Friday, they had to wear shirts of the team they supported, just to explain, my family live in Stoke Gifford village right next door to the church, smack bang in the middle of "gasland", back to the point, Nathan, my grandson had on his Bristol City shirt, 12 in all were at the party, all local lads, 8 had Liverpool shirts on, 2 Man Utd and 1 Chelsea.. Poor old Nathan was all on his own but he was proud because that was his " Granfers" and his team, no "gasheads" but all Premier teams shirts being worn.. What a sad state of affairs but Bristol City was there, mean and proud and I was proud when he told me, " City Till I Die" .. Edit....I forgot to say, Nathan is 8 years old and solid as a Red Rock....
Well done Nathan- I was 9 when I went to my first City game (4-0) v Norwich, well over 40 years ago, and have supported them since. Despite today, living 90 miles away, I and my wife (adopted into the city way of life) still go to as many games as possible- It really does my head in, the number of armchair fans that only support the team that wins every week- It must get really boring that-
I suppose the only consolation is that the Liverpool shirts outnumbered the Manc and Chelski. Maybe there is hope for City and Rovers in Bristol if Manc/Chelski did not swamp the rest.
Tis a shame to see a city82 shirt in what should be a Rovers heartland but better that than some random big prem club 100 miles from home. The Sky generation, if half the little ****s actively supported their home town clubs then maybe Bristol wouldn't be such a footballing backwater.
Wore my first city shirt when i was 8.. bantered by the glory hunters when we lost, but of course when were doing well they all joined on the bandwagon, claimed they've been supporting all their life.
Liverpool do seem to have quite a big fan base in the South West where Man Utd fans come from the South East. The small Chelski support seem to be the glory hunters who started supporting them when they won the league with Jose
I have to admit I do have a Liverpool shirt from when I was a kid not cause they were a big club but the passion of the fans and I went to their ground on the way to Scotland one yeah and just wow. In my street about 5 houses out of 14 are city fans 1s a gashead one had trials for the youngsters at the gate don't know how he did but back to the shirts most have city shirts tho one also has a messi shirt and I think a lot of these non local shirts are down to players being big names now and the fact local sports shops don't sell city or gashead shirts but have the big teams also with the mod you get a few families from all over
That's true all over the country all the sports shops stock shirts from the big Premier clubs and foreign teams like Barca and Real M but few stock shirts of which ever team is local to the shop it's down to what's on TV and it got you some rep
Bristol football has done **** all to attract the youngsters over the last 30 years by having 2 teams that alternate somewhere between the second and fourth tiers of English football. What 8 year old wants to see City play Crawley or Rovers play Accrington when they can watch Man Ure v Chelski ? If we had 2 decent sides playing at a decent level and being successful then local kids would support our teams. So to Mssrs Lansdown and Higgs - over to you - AGAIN!!!!
My daughter had the same in Chepstow school where they held a wear a football shirt for the day. She wore her City shirt where there was Man U and Liverpool shirts. But she said there was quite a few Cardiff, along with City and Rovers shirts, so there is hope over here. When I was 8 there used to be a bus that ran through the forest down to Chepstow and over to the gate 50p if I remember correctly for adults and free for kids. There is a catchment area over here if they ever started it again, mainly put off by the bridge fees and no direct route on public transport. You would be surprised by the amount of people I speak to that are city or rovers fans. But we could lose a lot of he youngsters now that Cardiff and Newport are either in the Prem or back in the league now.
The prem is going to be quite an attraction and although I'm pleased to see Newport back in the league I agree it might affect our chances of picking up supporters from over the water. I would also agree that the cost of traveling and Parking in Bristol could put a lot of people off traveling from anywhere outside a fairly small radius of either Bristol ground especially if you are talking about potential new supporters.
ROD. First Bus run X10, X11 and S14 services Monday to Saturday from Chepstow to Bristol Bus station via Cribbs Causeway. http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/bri...91&operator=3&op_id=3&from_timetable1=1&day=2
Not quite the same this was a one of a number of bus services operated solely on match days for City fans to get directly to Ashton Gate subsidised by the club, or a wealthy supporter, I seem to remember. I think there was one that came up from somewhere near Taunton and another that came down from either Cheltenham or Gloucester Because when I was a youngun in Filton and had problems with transport I caught it now and again. Now I'm not sure exactly when these buses ran definetly during our time in Division One not sure when else they ran.
Red rock can be quite soft but however it is more often associated with ochre, which will be used to colour things it is also a source of iron when smelted ......
There are two different rocks refered to as red rock one is red sandstone the other is more commonly refered to as Iron Stone
Does my head in when the quarries hit a red seam, causes me no end of grieve when the concrete turns pinky grey.
