No, that means nothing, they're still not offering him a contract, what happens if he goes back there to play and gets a bad injury.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has told Joey Barton he would remain a welcome part of his squad should he turn down a move to QPR.

Barton is considering a contract offer from the west London club after completing a medical with them.

The outspoken midfielder was placed on a free transfer by Newcastle earlier this month after publicly criticising the club on Twitter.

So far only QPR's interest has led to an offer for Barton, who tweeted last night he needed "some thinking time and space" to ponder the offer.

It is a request Pardew is happy to grant a player he would like to hold on to.

"I think that's where Joey is if I'm honest. I don't think I can add to that," he said.

"He knows he can come back here and we'll take care of him.

"I think he trusts me as a manager. He trusts the staff here and has a bond with the players.

"At the same time he's got an offer that is making him think to go elsewhere."

Pardew was speaking after his side scraped through to the third round of the Carling Cup thanks to a 2-1 extra-time win at League One Scunthorpe.

Teenage striker Sammy Ameobi, the younger brother of club stalwart Shola, struck his first Newcastle goal after 113 minutes to seal the win.

Pardew's side had looked on their way out of the competition when they trailed late into normal time after Chris Dagnall's 14th-minute opener.

But Ryan Taylor equalised with an 80th-minute free-kick before Ameobi's heroics left the manager to sing his praises.

"He's a player that we are excited about as a staff," Pardew said.

"He has a lackadaisical sort of style. You think sometimes: 'Do it quick Sammy'.

"He looks like he's slow then he draws two or three players in and wriggles out of it and then he's gone. He's that quick.

"The goal summed him up what he does in training. It was no surprise for us.

"He's going to be a big player for us.

"He's got a good brother and great parents. I'm excited about him."

Newcastle suffered an injury blow before half-time, however, when Mike Williamson limped off with a leg injury.

"I'm not sure what his injury is at the moment because he claimed it was his knee, but he's now wearing a (protective) boot," Pardew added.

"It sums up the start of the campaign for him. He's had injuries and a bitty pre-season.

"He played 20 minutes looked a little rusty and then got injured.

"It's now just going to be about getting some work into him now and getting him right physically and mentally."

Pardew has a problem. Barton may or may not play regularly in the first team this season. He has quite a good first choice line-up, but he will be scraping the barrell after just one or two injuries.

Pardew has a vision of where he wants to be and how he wants to play (like all managers) and Barton doesn't figure in those plans. However, he needs him at the moment - if only for this season. He doesn't want to offer Barton a longer contract because they know once that happens he will be impossible to shift. Just look at the interest in Barton at the moment. Great player, 28 years old and on a free, but only the Rs have come in for him. So that means 2, 3 or 4 years of high wages.

Pardew doesn't want a loose cannon tweeting like a twat all over the place, getting involved in any controvery on, or off, the pitch. What he wants is Barton to fill a hole for him for this season and then to bugger off quietly.

I think that Barton would be a fool to remain at Newcastle (not that I am too fussed whether he comes to us or not), but Football is a funny old game.

    I reckon he won't sign.

I think that Warnock should kick him in to touch by lunch time if no decision is made!

That would be a good idea, if only to show that he will not be messed around by the prima donnas of football.

personally, I think Barton would be a fool not to come to QPR for footballing reasons - (1) It will provide him with a platform on which to prove to Newcastle they are wrong to let him go, (2) if he has any sense, he will get a relegation clause inserted into the contrat enabling to leave for a specific sum IF we do go down, (3) Newcastle have made it clear he is not part of their long term plans.

Regardless of whether I want to see him in a QPR shirt, he does have the experience we will need to stay up

It is being reported that Joey Barton's agent Willie Mckay would receive more than £600,000 if his client signs the three year deal he has been offered by QPR.
Also saying were offering Barton between £60,000-£80,000 a week.**** me that's around £10 million over 3 years. That's Neil's budget gone on 1 twat.
I also pressume we've altered our sallary cap of £20,000.Just wonder how the other players in the squad will view this. Can't see Adel being too chuffed with this news!!

The deadline should be this morning. He has had long enough now night to think it over. Taking any longer is showing us a lack of respect.

I think we missed the opportunity when he was down in London. Now he's gone home and having watched the Newcastle match last night where the crowd were constantly singing"there's only one joey Barton". I think he'll stat put. Even as a loyal Rangers fan I think I'd stay put, in all honesty they're a much bigger club than us and despite Fernandes takeover were still seen as a joke of a club by many. We will be a force to reckon with but it will be a gradual progress.

Don't really care what others think of us; our concern should be our survival this season short term and long term putting together a good squad of players to sustain us into the coming seasons. Joey may or may not be a part of that, the ball's in his court now, but we must not allow ourselves to be distracted by him alone. The window closes in 5 days and our other targets must be pursued with equal vigour. I think he would be a great signing for us but there are other areas of the team more pressingly in need of strengthening.

Any of you guys been offered a job somewhere very different to where you have lived before? He is a 100% northerner, I reckon he may be a little terrified of big city living. I just want this sorted either way, but feel slightly sorry for the guy having to make big personal decisions in public. Let me instantly retract that - I would feel sorry for him if he wasn't twating all the time

We must give him a chance to mull things over without the media interest, I understand that his girlfriend is exppecting a baby, so there are obviously some personal matter to discuss, however that said if a decission is not made the end of the day then we should move on.

Plus he stayed in london last night as he went to a Puma launch, not as it had been report that he had returned to the North East.
It has just been reported that talks went late into the night(SSN). They also said that he was back at Harlington this morning...... so it is not over yet
