... from when I was about 13. I then sat down for an hour with my son and went through it page by page. As a young lad I was obsessed with all things Saints, as my son is now. I used to cut out anything that was related to Saints from magazines, newspapers, sticker books and card collection sets. We were both transfixed by the things I had in there. I found my 1984 FA C up semi-final ticket priced at £4. It was mostly from about 1980-1984, but some posters and articles either side; this would have made me 10-14. There were a number of team photos, which made me realise just how good that 1977-79 kit was; simply awesome. I had articles and interviews about when Kevin Keegan was unveiled at The Potters Heron pub, without a soul knowing who we had signed. It was funny that I read this the same weekend the Not 606 ers found the photo of Jay-Rod and Cortese on twitter; I bet Lawrie Mac couldn't have kept that signing a secret in today's multi-media digital world. It was interesting to read what people thought about the Keegan signing at that time, and how that really raised the profile of our club even further since the 76 Cup win. I have newspaper cuttings (paper headlines and dates) of the build up to Steve Williams' transfer to Arsenal and the build up for a few days before hand with offers from Arsenal, Williams falling out with Lawries Mac, refusing to play again and then eventually signing for Arsenal. Steve Wilkliams was my childhood hero, and I remember to this day the moment he left for Arsenal ... broke my heart. I have kept (don't ask me why) the front page of the Daily Mail from the date that Mark Wright and Steve Moran were arrested at the airport in Sweden, accused of rape. There is an article on Mark Wright's punch up and consequent falling out with big Lawrie. One great piece is a tiny article on the number of foreigners coming into our league, and a reference to the then Saints' team being one of a few all English teams (1984) and we went on to come second. There are loads of articles on David Armstrong coming to Saints and then getting in the England squad. I found a fabulous piece on Dave Watson, who ended his "Hell in Germany" at Werder Bremen by signing on at The Dell. There were posters and articles on people I had completely forgotten. How could I forget Trevor Hebberd, Keith Cassells, George Lawrence, Mike Pickering, Steve Baker, Manny Andrewzeski (?) and anyone remember a lad called Ken Armstrong??? We signed him from a Scottish side for £50k and he was going to be the next best thing that Lawrie had unveiled ... I don't remember him at all; a big 6'3" Centre Back. It also reminded me of some of the better known names but not top stars that played for us: Phil Boyer, Alan Curtis, Charlie George, Ted MacDougall, to name a few. What really amazed my son and I was just how media popular Saints were back then. There were big back page headlines about us and articles taking the whole page. It made me realise that times had changed for our great club over the past 7 years and that perhaps now we are genuinely heading back to those big back page headlines in the next few seasons. I can't wait. Sorry to bore, but just thought I'd share some of those memories and moments that came back to me this weekend. Anyone else got an old scrap book.
Not boring at all, quite the opposite Must be nostalgic for you looking through it and seeing all the old faces in the Saints shirt. I know that sort of era around the early 80s was really the high point of our existence, so the closest we've got to that was our exploits at the start of the century. Who knows, maybe we can reach those heights again in the not so distant future
Brings back great memories FLT. I remember those days really well and until now it has been my best time as a Saint. I have no scrap-book but have got all the Saints programmes from that era. George Lawrence was always a favourite odf mine as were Steve Baker and Manny. Wonderful times! Now it's a chance to do even better!
Nice one .......some memories there to be sure. A nice keepsake to pass down the years. My uncle started one for me when I was 5 covering 1947 to 1963. Unfortunately it got accidentally burned when there was a clear out at my Nans home in the 60's. It would have been priceless and something for me to pass on to my children.
I should mention, the closest I have to a scrapbook is keeping some programmes and tickets...if I can find them I might start putting them together into some sort of collection.
Not a scrap book fatletiss, but I have got the '76 Cup Final ticket in a frame tucked away somewhere. Like your Semi Final ticket it was unbelievably cheap at£2.50! That wouldn't even get you a drink in the new Wembley.
Not got a scrap book but do have a plaque from my under 14 boys team 1972 73 season sadly now minus the small disc with the picture of a player on it but never the less my name is engraved with leading goal scorer 41 goals in a season . I can still remember the pride i felt when it was presented to me and it tease my now teenage son as to what a great finisher i was and how unfortunate for him he is a left back a v good one i might add and never gets the sniff of a goal and the great feeling that occurs when slotting the ball home and of course at 14 in my mind when playing i was the great Micky Channon.Oh the memories
lol CSH. Tell your so that I played left back as a teenager ... and bombed forward to score loads!!!!
Not boring at all, mate. Yes, I remember Ken Armstrong, and I liked the 77-79 kit too. Liked the 1980-85 even more though. I think I was just a bit fed up with stripes at that time. To the doubters [not aimed this at you, FLT - just saying] who protest, red and white stripes only - there's nothing wrong with occasionally trying something else. We all know we'll come back to stripes eventually.
Manny was a star in the League Cup semi final against Leeds, kept Tony Currie quiet. Trevor Hebberd turned into a very good left back.
What a great post. I have my own scrapbook which sort of cross references with my kids' "diaries" the we kept. One of my kids was born the day Phil Boyer scored his first goals (3-0 v Burnley) during our promotion season, while another was born the week KK signed. At the time I wrote it was like the Queen agreeing to turn up at the local fete. My third child was born the night we beat Liverpool 2-0 with Danny Wallace scoring twice, including the goal of the season. Friends and family take the piss that I use Saints references to remember significant events. Now I'm preparing to take my grandchildren to matches, so I'll have a whole new set of cross references to help stave off Alzheimer's.
Absolutely nothing wrong with that! I follow up every thing that some one talks about from the past with a "We beat so and so that day and thingymebob scored a great header"
Yes he did. Before that, he was at Oxford and won a League Cup medal, he was actually man-of-the -match.
I remember ... against Luton 3-0, I think. Local lad to my home town too. Think he was from Ropley/Alresford/Bighton
You can't beat a good poke around in the attic to rekindle old memories. I still have my 1966 World Cup Willy scrap book with pictures of many Saints players autographed photos. Terry Paine, Martin Chivers etc Used to wait for ages after the games to get the autographs. It's a shame when I became a teenager that I felt I was to old to carry on keeping records and photos. Still have my Quarter, Semi and FA Cup tickets from 1976 though. Happy Days
Been meaning to post this for ages, but seems to fit quite well in here. Before my time, so have no idea who any of them are apart from the Puppet Master himself! please log in to view this image
