About our offer for these 2 Pompey players! I know we are in desperate straights ourselves with our poor, poor form and league position but I feel a little uneasy about us picking the bones off the Pompey corpse! Portsmouth through years of serious mismanagement are going to the wall which isn't our fault BUT making a derisory offer for 2 of their best players in their hour of need just doesn't put us in a very good light! I know its survival of the fittest and dog eat dog but lets face it guys, when we were up to our necks in administration 9 years ago, we didn't appreciate our best players being sold for peanuts! The other side to the Pompey situation is that IF they are docked points (15 is the standard punishment) it will mean certain relegation for them if they survive as a football club which at this moment in time is in doubt. Our club is in a parlous state with huge debts and over reliance on just one man to service them year on year so I have plenty of sympathy for the Pompey fans that are facing the extinction of their football club. It would be a low point if they do go out of business as they have always been a great club with a rich history and of a similar size and fanbase to ours. In reality though Portsmouth going into administration could just well save our sorry arses for another year. What a horrible thought and not one that I would want to live with!
is there anything you dont feel uneasy about? if they wernt in trouble and we did a keane era purchase of multi millions and they didnt solve the problem you'd be lambasting the management for wasting money one the other hand if some other club picked them up for cheap you'd be complaining we missed an opportunity
I would love to have these 2 players come to us but not if it meant raping another club to get them! There is such a thing as ethics or did they all go out of the window back in 2008 and the Lehman Brothers crash! If Jewell wasn't so bloody clueless we wouldn't have had to resort to these panic buys and further dragging our name through the mud in the process!
i really dont understand your point, were hardly going to give them money for nothing, im sure were not just looking at the Portsmouth players simply because we could get them cheap, its obviously a factor, but even then, the money we pay will help them pay off the debt of a couple of million is it? remember the first offer of a million was a foot in the water bid increase that offer plus the inevitable add ons and we'll actually help portsmouth survive. Im sure we're just one of many 'vulltures'. Not trying to say they should accept our low offer if someone comes in with a higher one, and i do think if that happens within reason we should participants in the 'bidding war', but an auction is rarely started at a high price
I work with a Pompey fan and he says that their market value in normal times would be £2 Million each such is their pedigree and their importance in the team. I'm not suggesting that we put in a combined bid of £4 Million but for 2 clearly decent players we should be looking at a bid of £2 Million which is less than the bid we put in for Sharp and Coppinger. The other part to it would be the players own willingness to come as they are portsmouth homegrown players. In the end they probably wont have a choice as their club may not even exist.
Warky Sorry to say this bud but i think you are just using this to have another dig at Jewell/Clegg and Evans. This is football i'm afraid, it happened to us and we survived (just) life goes on and if it wasn't us it would be someone else, which in actual fact it probably will be, if the Leicester rumours are true!!
to be honest JWM if we decided not to snap them up then somebody inevitably would and as a town fan first and foremost I would much prefer to get these 2 players for a cheap price than let someone else!
didn't you have your own players swapped for peanuts when you were in administration? swings and roundabouts...
I agree that we should not pussy foot around and get in there with a decent bid but we don't seem capable of that and will probably miss out again. I know we have now upped our offer but whats the betting it still wont be enough for Pompey to clear the PAYE debt. We probably offered £1.5 mil and said thats the final offer!!
Players are worth what someone is willing to buy or sell them for... if Pompey sell them 'cheap' then that is their problem not ours - we didn't get them into their financial position!
Very true supers, I can remember how I felt when we sold some of our young stars for peanuts when we last crashed out of the prem. It was us then, Portsmouth now I am sure in a year or two's time it will be somebody else, that is the nature of the beast I am afraid. This is all rather irrelevant though, as we seem totally incapable of putting in a realistic bid...**** off Clegg you useless ****er...! http://www.twtd.co.uk/news.php?storyid=20029&title=second_bid_for_portsmouth_duo_turned_down
I do agree, although we did get ourselves in a similar position and obviously we still remember feeling abused. Atlhough when you think about it Portsmouth have been in this situation for the best part of 4/5 years and with no saviour on the horizon who are we to say "That's Wrong" as so many have put if it isn't us then someone else will snatch them and in all honesty we put in the original offer before all this happened so PJ may have found a couple of good players, relatively cheaply who will (have no choice/want) to come to ipswich. The sort of thing we have been crying out for and lambasting him for not doing. The fact that it is at another club's expense does sour it I suppose but at the same time we are a Business as our Portsmouth and Money makes the world (of Football) go round
Ah well Our second bid has just been turned down by Portsmouth so are we taking the piss with the offer? I get the feeling we will look elsewhere and get in a loan on deadline day! Cheers Clegg you couldn't do a deal in a whore house!
Why do we have to submit a bid and wait a week for it to be turned down? Do other clubs really operate like this? Surely we should get on the phone to the Pompey board and have in mind a maximum bid and negotiate directly, not via fax or post or whatever Clegg-head is using. Don't know if Clegg and Jewell have noticed but we are in the **** (aka relegation battle) without a paddle (aka defenders)!
I agree Svendust Has no one at Portman Road ever heard of conference calls FFS! Maybe we are sending our bids via tractor!
The real reason is that these signings have to be agreed by the betting syndicate first! They stand to lose an awful lot of money if we suddenly stop leaking goals like we have been!
