The police are to launch a murder investigation into the deaths of 13 people shot dead by soldiers in Londonderry on Bloody Sunday in 1972. The move comes after the PSNI and Public Prosecution Service reviewed the findings of the Saville inquiry, which said none of those killed was armed. The police investigation is expected to take at least four years and involve a team of 30 detectives. Police have said no decision has been made as to when it will start. Chief constable Matt Baggott told the Northern Ireland Policing Board: "It is a matter that I think we should be investigating and will be investigating." Assistant Chief Constable Drew Harris added: "That will be a large investigation obviously and setting aside the resources to properly start that and take that forward is a corporate issue which is under investigation at this time. "There is not the expertise free and available to undertake an investigation of this size and that is why we are faced with dilemmas around prioritisation. "The special resources required for this scale of investigation are just not available at this moment to commence an investigation of this scale and length of time." The Saville Inquiry said the Army had fired the first shots on Bloody Sunday and were to blame for what happened. It published its report in June 2010, after a 12-year inquiry. Prime Minister David Cameron issued an apology, describing what happened as "both unjustified and unjustifiable." True - and if there had not been an illegal march, which had created "a highly dangerous situation" nobody would have been killed
Bloody Sunday is a page in a story of an ongoing dispute which has entered into a peace process and seen convicted people from both sides of the dispute set free as part of the peace process. 7/7 is a recent terrorist attrocity committed by people with whom we have not and probably cannot negotiate.
We are doing exactly as they ask....withdrawing from Iraq and Afghanistan So in line with current feelings on Bloody Sunday... Get over it
By giving evidence to the Saville inquiry the soldiers gained the protection of immunity from prosecution provided they told the truth. Even with this protection, they still could not bring themselves to tell the truth. I wasn't here when Tony Blair announced there would be a new inquiry into the events of Bloody Sunday but I have spoken with one of the family members about this very topic and it was a tough one to swallow but they took it in order to get to the truth. Since the release of the Saville inquiry this family member has been very vociferous in seeking prosecutions. Not all of them have. That is fair enough. The fact is that had they told the truth in giving their evidence to Saville, then there would be no potential prosecutions now. It has been 2 years since the Saville inquiry was released. This is a considered move and I welcome it.
People released on licence under the terms of the GFA were imprisoned for politically motivated "crimes". The murdering of innocent civilians by an instrument of the British Government does not constitute a politically motivated "crime".
I understand you are trying to get the rise but according to the British Prime Minister the actions of the paratroopers were "Unjustified and unjustifiable". I think that pretty much sums it up.
