From the Independent... Hull may feature regularly in polls about the worst place to live in Britain but Assem Allam, who became chairman of Hull City 15 months ago, will not have a word said against it. Allam fled from his native Egypt in 1968, studied economics at Hull University and became an entrepreneur and local philanthropist. He has given money to Hull Kingston Rovers (£1m) and the Hull Truck Theatre Company, and took over sponsorship of the British Open Squash Championship, which will move from London's O2 Arena to Hull next year. Now he is arranging for the Tigers, who are chasing a play-off place in the Championship after Nick Barmby was appointed manager, to play a fundraising friendly against Al-Ahly to help families of the 74 people killed after the match between the Egyptian club and Al-Masry in Port Said last month. Hull wore black armbands at their first game after the tragedy and Al-Ahly were invited over after their president rang Allam to thank him for his condolences. Fifa have also donated $250,000 (£159,000).
These Allams are great people I think, we are lucky to have owners with a heart unlike most football bosses.
Except it doesnt, it is one of the two papers worth reading (Independant and Guardian). The Allams seem to be nice guys. It is good the city and club are getting such great publicity.
It appeared in the list in that ****e book in 2005 and we came 1st is 2007 and 2nd in 2008 with the bald twat and fat bird from Channel 4, but that's it. Anyone who slags of Hull is a ****.
Not sure it does. Famously did once, and was picked up by that Allsopp bint on TV. I doubt we've been top since, it was just memorable that one time. Middlesbrough, I'm sure, has been top since us. We do not need this to be played up to, especially not by a paper that is otherwise widely respected. 'Regularly' is a bullshit, inaccurate word to use. The Independent is meant to be a quality paper, I wouldn't normally have expected it to pick up on something like that so readily. A tabloid, yes. I don't think we turn up on these lists half as much as people like to say we do. Even people from Hull, the ****ing morons, like to say it. Well, maybe not from mostly from Hull, it's the dickweeds from Cottingham etc. You're Hull really, **** off!! We're not even the ****test place to live in East Yorkshire, Goole are the champions here. ****ing Independent with Dom Joly being all smug & pseudo-intellectual on their adverts. He just shouts into a giant telephone! **** him. I'm getting sidetracked here. To summarise - they need to report more accurately, be less lazy and stop reinforcing negative, false perceptions. Else I'll rant off! Right, off to do the pots now...
Agree with Party Hull, a quality broadsheet newspaper should not be reinforcing negative stereotypes like this one in the first line of an article, especially when it's a load of bollocks. What annoys me most is that loads of people think it's some kind of official statistic. They say things like 'Hull is the worst place to live.' or 'Hull was voted worst place to live'.
I dream of the day the Hull city boundary reaches its rightful place. They will choke on their beluga.
Two papers for people who don't want to know about things other than the viewpoints of failed leftie luvvies. And people who can't even spell the name of the newspaper they think is so wonderful. Which is is why they sell so few copies.
Hull has, and always will, get a bad press from most of the rags on offer, fact of life we are at the end of the road so to speak. There was a joke, as such, that Hull is not exactly the end of the earth but you can see it from there. Having traveled quite a lot, both watching City and not, I can honestly say there are a lot of place worse, but it would be churlish of me to mention them as they probably have their own supporters as well. I know this, Hull is surrounded by splendid countryside, we are not far away from holiday places, ok Withernsea may not be the Costas, but still. Bridlington and Scarborough are both popular with East and West Riding people. But it seems the Allam's are following, very admirably, in the footsteps of Harold Needler, and that in itself means we are very fortunate, Portsmouth or Rangers FC anyone?
The author of the crap towns book admitted he had never even visited Hull when he 'wrote' the book - since, a new book has been made based on facts and opinions which has Luton at no.1 I think. That Ch4 programme got scrapped - Allsopp has since said she hated doing it and thought it was a load of made up rubbish. To be more fair, instead, channel 4 decided to set up a website to vote and leave comments i.e. let the public decide - last time I looked, Hull wasn't even in the top 10. Blackpool was no.1. Yet the media still persist with stating these things as 'facts' as if they ever meant anything in the first place. It's just poor, lazy journalism - lazy in the fact they all trot it out like sheep as they're too lazy to think of anything else to write. They could have been different for once and taken the angle of 'People often get the wrong impression of Hull and Assem Allam is doing everything possible to prove them wrong...'
