Receiving recognition like this adds yet another string to the ‘2017-bow’ and I’d like to thank VisitEngland for this acknowledgement". – Kirsten Simister, Curator Other attractions awarded the Best Told Story Accolade (which was only given to twelve sites across England) include the Cutty Sark in Greenwich, the Museum of London and Castle Howard in York. http://www.itv.com/news/calendar/update/2015-01-08/hull-gallery-picks-up-prestigious-award/
One of the few places outside of London where you could see the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Andy Warhol and I was privileged to see both. Warhol I wasn't fussed about as I can't see what all the fuss is about his work, but da Vinci's work blew my mind as I just stared at the intricacy of his work. He was a genius of epic proportions his drawings and his writings meant that I spent a couple of hours staring at a wall with all of his work attached to it. And just recently there was a poppy clock on the foyer floor and viewed from the gallery above it was a marvellous tribute to those who gave their lives in so many wars.
I remember back in the early sixties, there was hell on about the huge expenditure for Fran's Hals' Portrait of a Young Woman. I don't recall the price paid but fifty odd years on, I bet it's worth a bloody fortune and has proven a brilliant investment. I haven't been back to Hull since 1979 - it's time to return!
When I was back recently it was good to see again after many years, I was also quite moved as well by the Maritime Museum.Lets face it we are a unique people from Hull.
Yes although not in abundance Hull has some great stuff to see if only people could be bothered. Ferens and the Maritime museum are getting recognition but the Old Grammar School has some stunning replica Egyptology artefacts along with an actual mummy on show. Wilberforce House is a shadow of its former self though since it dismantled the replica of conditions in a slave ship which has been replaced by display boards which ate too long winded to read.
