I don't remember that at all. Nowt. I know nothing of Sportclub Cambuur. And little of their hometown of Leeuwarden. Oh, except for that it only hosted a group stage game in the bloody Korfball World Cup!!!!!!!!!! For real. Really it did!!!!! As evidenced in the official song of the Korfball World Cup!!! Korfball's coming home!!!!
Strange one that, at that time I was travelling to Holland regularly and passed through Leeuwarden from time to time, but this friendly I just have no recollection of. I would have thought me knowing the town and going to City at the time the two would have rung a bell, but for some reason, it doesn't.
I think it was Cambuur where a number of City fans working in Holland used to go. There was a section in their fans forum about City. It was either there or Top OSS, another Dutch team they went to, where they showed the home lads ways of diverting the Feyenoord fans and stopped them taking over behind the goal, something which hadn't happened before, and got quite a lot of attention.
Yes I do. Not vividly, but yes. Wasnt there some link re Rob McDonald? #mostinterestingreplyoftheyearsofar?
He played for them and also coached there too - he's a player I always kept an eye on; he lived Hanley Road area and was best mates with my ex brother in law.
Don't recall that one but i do recall an England U23 international against Sweden at Boothferry Park .. think that was around a similar time in the 70s .. got a program from it somewhere in my loft and i seem to remember our very own Roy Greenwood getting a run out
He didn't. It was November 1970 and he didn't join us until 1971. Some good players in that team. Over 17,500 there, more than 2,000 more than the next home game, which followed a 3-0 win away at Oxford. Our crowds were up and down even in those days. Must have been less to do on a midweek night than a Saturday afternoon. https://www.11v11.com/matches/england-v-sweden-11-november-1970-256411/
I went to the game. Amazing to think that the two goals were scored by someone who two years previously had played and scored in the European Cup Final. That team would have given a lot of senior international sides a run for their money.
