Hull City are monitoring the performances of Shola Ameobi.

The Chronicle understands that Steve Bruce sent assistant coach Steve Agnew to St James’ Park to assess Ameobi’s display against West Bromwich Albion in the last home game.

Bruce is after a centre-forward and is aware that Ameobi’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

The Geordie manager also wanted to check out Shane Long in the 2-1 win for United, but could not have been disappointed by the contributions of Ameobi. It is believed that Ameobi is open-minded about his future, but at 32 he is eager to make the most of his peak years after a career in which he hasn’t always been guaranteed first-team football.

That’s certainly something Alan Pardew has listened to this season and before the 1-0 win at Man United on Saturday, Ameobi had started the previous seven games.

Ameobi has not scored in the Premier League for the Magpies this term but has kept out Toon No 9 Papiss Cisse.

He will be free to discuss a move to another club in January, but knows that knuckling down and focusing on first-team chances are the key to his dream of playing at the World Cup finals in Brazil.

Ameobi had said earlier in the season: “I feel I can play football for Newcastle.

“I think I’ve got a little bit left in me.

“Whichever way the club wants to go, it’s down to them.

“If I’m wanted at Newcastle, I’ll play at Newcastle. If I’m not, I’ll go elsewhere.

“It means a lot to be playing now. I’m in the latter stages of my career.

“In recent months, I haven’t done that, which is very frustrating.

“I feel like I’m fit and strong enough to compete with anyone here at Newcastle.”

One of my Newcastle mates loves him, says he gives a lot for the team but just doesn't score enough to warrant first team football.

He's only ever once got more than 10 goals in a season, and that was in the Championship.

Not sure about that one at all.

My socks just pulled themselves up.

That articles wrong anyway, he's not free to speak to anyone in January. Not until June 1st.

Hmm... Bruce sends Agnew to watch a match involving Shane Long. Geordie paper decides 2 + 2 = 5.

I would say he should see a doctor, but I guess there's not much even modern science can do for that condition.

I'd much rather have had the out-of-contract-at-the-time Carlton Cole.

    Ameobi is ****e. FACT.

He can speak to foreign clubs come Jan, just not English ones.

He's absolute mince anyway, 9 league goals in his last 87 appearances.

I don't think we need to scout Shane Long, we already bid £6m for him and we know we'd still take him.

He can't. We had this about one of our players a month or two back and after trawling through the rule book discovered that no team from any football association may legally approach a player playing under the English FA until given noticed in writing that they will not be receiving a contract offer, they're rejected the contract offer; both submitted June 1st, or the parent club has given permission to speak to other clubs.

It'd be worth him doing more than dipping his toe in the water, he could put his left leg in, his left leg out.....

Foreign based clubs can speak to English based players in January.

The only restriction is on English based clubs speaking to English based players.

It could all be irrelevent anyway, the article could be saying he's been told by Newcastle that he's free to go looking for a club in January because they're not going to retain him next summer.

Might be worth having a word with DJ Campbell first, to see how the rest of our season is going to pan out, before we start spending money on new strikers.

    Maybe, for around £300,000 yeah.

Haven't we had enough of buying/loaning strikers that can't score? <laugh>

It's getting to that point of the Season again; the build up to the JTW and all the ridiculous rumours that come with it.

Actually, no one can approach players at English clubs until June. I thought it was how you say, but after looking through the rule book I learned otherwise. Just to back it up find an instance of a player from an English club agreeing to move to another club on a free before the summer without the parent clubs permission.

The rule book says it quite clearly, you should have a look.
