Jonathon Margetts hits quick-fire hat-trick to see off Scunthorpe in under-21s derby... please log in to view this image A THIRD successive hat-trick from Jonathon Margetts gave Hull City under-21s their seventh win on the spin, thanks to a 3-2 victory at Scunthorpe United this afternoon. In a carbon-copy scoreline of the last time the two teams met in January, the Tigers had Margetts to thank after Tony Pennock's side found themselves 2-0 down at the break. Goals from Jack Dyche and Noel Burdett put the Iron comfortably in front in a first 45 minutes to forget for City, and it could have been worse had Jack Mawson's spot-kick not been saved by Tigers stopper Joe Walker. Thankfully, the battle of the Humber belonged to the Tigers in the second half, much due to the brilliance of Margetts. Three goals in 19 scintillating minutes turned the Final Third Development League tie at Brigg Town on its head, and put City well in the driving seat for the title. They now sit clear at the top of the East Division table with four games to play. For a full match report, reaction and pictures, see tomorrow's Hull Daily Mail. I'm sure he was at Gainsborough, then extended the loan in January but was still playing for our U21s days later. I dunno what the situation is there but regardless, he's scored 3 consecutive hat tricks ffs. He's got to be worth a try at a higher level.
Players on loan at non-league clubs can still play for our U21's, I think that's probably why some of them are at non-league clubs.
Jonathon Margetts scored a third successive hat-trick to help the Under-21s come from 2-0 down to beat Scunthorpe United 3-2 at Brigg Town this afternoon. Goals from Jack Dyche and Noel Burdett put the home side in control at the break, and it could have been worse had Jack Mawson's spot-kick not been saved by Joe Walker with the score at 0-0. However, a superb second half comeback saw the Tigers take all three points as Margetts netted three times in the space of 19 minutes to secure a seventh successive win in all competitions for Tony Pennock’s side. Pennock made a host of changes to the side that beat Hall Road Rangers in the Under-21s’ last outing towards the end of February, with Joe Walker, Josh Tymon, Greg Luer and Margetts coming back into the side, along with the inclusion of trialists Eddie Rodgerson and Taylor Tombides. The Tigers made a bright start and came to close to opening the scoring in the first minute of the game when Tombides’ cross was met by Luer inside the box but his header was brilliantly kept out Joe Anyon in the Iron goal. Margetts was the next to try his luck but the striker could only find the side-netting with his first-time effort before seeing a goal correctly ruled out for offside. The home side wasted a glorious opportunity to grab the first goal of the game after 17 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after a foul on Burdett inside the box, but Mawson’s effort from 12-yards was brilliantly kept out by Walker low to his right. It mattered not though as Scunthorpe opened the scoring two minutes later. Good work from Burdett and Emilio Oliver-Stothard saw the ball fall to Dyche inside the box, and he found the back of the net with a powerful low drive. The Tigers suffered an injury blow when Johan Ter Horst was forced off with a hamstring injury and he was replaced by Will Annan on the half hour mark. Things went from bad to worse for the visitors when Scunthorpe added a second shortly before the break when Levi Sutton’s cross was met by Burdett, who guided a header past Walker from close-range. There was still enough time left in the first half for City to create one more scoring opportunity, which fell to Margetts, but his goalbound effort was kept out in impressive fashion by Anyon. The second half began with the Tigers exerting tonnes of pressure on the Iron back line, which went on to be the pattern for the majority of the half but Anyon continued to thwart the Tigers, denying Luer and Matty Dixon in the opening ten minutes of the second half. However, the Iron custodian could do nothing to prevent Margetts from making it 2-1 three minutes before the hour mark, who found the back of the net with a neat finish after a solo run into the box. Anyon was enjoying a fine performance in the Scunthorpe goal and produced three more excellent saves to keep the Iron ahead, twice from Luer and once from Annan. However, the Tigers’ pressure didn’t let up and when Margetts capitalised on a mistake in the Scunthorpe defence, it needed a pinpoint finish to beat the impressive Anyon and that’s exactly what the in-form striker produced to level the scores. And Margetts completed his hat-trick with 12 minutes remaining following a quick counter attack, bursting into the box before slotting the ball under Anyon and into the back of the net. Anyon was forced to produce more heroics to prevent the Tigers from adding further goals, denying both Margetts and Luer yet again. Scunthorpe forced some set-piece opportunities late on and Taron Hare could have snatched an equaliser but the central defender couldn’t divert his header on target from a corner, and the Tigers held on for all three points. Scunthorpe Utd: Joe Anyon, Emilio Oliver-Stothard, Reece Mosanya, DeAndre Watkiss, Taron Hare, Riley Baker, Levi Sutton, Jack Dyche, Noel Burdett, Jack Mawson, Terry Hawkridge. Subs Not Used: Connor Purdue, Ben Ledger, Sonny Shilling, Matt Stockhill. Hull City: Joe Walker, Leon Dawson, Josh Tymon, Matty Dixon, Eddie Rodgerson, Ben Clappison, Johan Ter Horst (Will Annan 30), Max Clark, Jonathon Margetts, Greg Luer, Taylor Tombides. Subs Not Used: Jonathon Hirst, Eoghan McCawl, John Mahon, Ben Hinchliffe. That's three hat-tricks in three games, he's sending the right message to Steve Bruce. If we secure our safety with games to spare, I reckon we might see him make his PL debut. We also had two trialists, Eddie Rodgerson and Taylor Tombides. Tombides is an Aussie youth international who came from West Ham, his brother Dylan was the lad that died suddenly last year.
