Happy birthday Swansea! Here's to the players and fans of today and to those who stood on the terraces before us. That's proper history that!
100 years, do we get a letter of congratulations from the Queen? 2nd in the table, should ML get Knighted and RM get knotted?. No I personally thank all our Managers over the last 10 years who have taken us, one step at a time to where we are now, and the players who have come and gone, stuck with us and even came back to us, cheers Leon, statistically the best passer in Europe, you are truly a Swansea Jack, and thanks all the other players over the years who have helped us rise again and made this city proud, thank you all, we are indeed proud of you all for what you did for us. And now fantastic new signings and an incredible new Manager. I still can't get over the fact that Michael laudrup is Manager of Swansea city, are you kidding me? Astonishing? 10 years ago? Put a bet on that and what odds? Welcome our new signings, what a start you have made and with real passion, you will look back on life and know you were legends at Swansea and you have only been here a few weeks! Thank you past players who are already legends for Swans Fans and have got us to the place we are, we thank you all. Biggest thanks to Hugh Jenkins. You are an amazing man who has done so much for this club and also the city of Swansea, make no mistake of that. Swansea is now on the map world wide and that is all down to the man Huw Jenkins who had belief, fiscal sense and a love of his club. Ultimately, it is down to Huw Jenkins and I give him the credit he deserves for his forward thinking, shrewd appointments, frugal signings, astute sales and has put us in a position where we can buy a set of players who can not only keep us in the Premiership but push for a top position this year or over the coming years. Happy Birthday Swansea City, proud to be, all my life, Jack Army despite being Port Talbot.
100 years old, who would have thought we'd get there with Petty in charge 10 years ago ? And Dai, can you do us a match report of our first game, you were probably there
And here is the first game report.... “Swansea Town Make Promising Debut at Vetch Field. Huge Crowd Witness Some Sparkling Football Bravo Swansea Town! The Swansea Town Soccer Club, about whose doings and expectations there has been so much discussion during the past couple of months, have at last made their bow before the Swansea spectators, and the ten thousand people at the Vetch Field, who came from all parts of South Wales, were delighted with their play. To have run a team like Cardiff, who have had a couple of season’s experience, to a draw in the first home match, was a performance of which every member of the Swansea Town team can, with satisfaction, be proud. One thing was proved beyond a doubt, and that was that the directors have a really capable lot of players at their disposal, and though the forwards were at fault with their shooting, their defence was exceptionally safe. The Swansea Town players were certainly the more aggressive lot, and more than once it was luck on the Cardiff side rather than skill which kept the Swansea men from scoring the winning goal. The duel for points in the closing stages was productive of some thrilling football, and both sides played for all they were worth. The Town team rose to the occasion in splendid style, and not only prevented Cardiff from getting on top, but they had a moral victory, and there was scarcely a spectator on the field who did not give Swansea credit for being the better side. Swansea’s luck was out. In a couple of weeks, when the players become better acquainted, they will hold their own with the best in the Second Division of the Southern League.”
What more can I add? I would just like to thank those early pioneers from the bottom of my heart. I bet they never imagined what a giant they were giving birth to. In supporting them I have experienced a whole range of emotions from utter despair to delirious ecstasy and, family apart, nothing else in my life has come close to doing that. Happy centenary, my wonderful Swans, let's hope we continue to fuel the legacy for those of us to come.
Yes Happy Birthday and many thanks to al both past and present who have played a part in our journey so far. Hope I am pushing to be on top when I am 100 but more likely to be pushing up daisies
Happy 100th Birthday Swans. We support an amazing club whose fans have been on a roller coaster ride of agony and ecstasy over the years, I've been watching since 1965 when we were in a slow decline but then I saw us rise up under Harry Griffiths and then Toshack took us all the way to the top only for us to fall right down again. Lowest moments for me were when we nearly went out of business (twice), helplessly witnessing the attempted asset stripping of my club by Petty (until the Jack Army fought together against him) and being bottom of league two looking certs for relegation out of the league at Christmas having lost to Exeter at home. Flynn thankfully brought in some key players who helped us claw our way back and save us on the final day against Hull, a game that is etched in every fans memory. We've gone from strength to strength since those days, with promotions at Bury and Brighton and of course that magical day at Wembley to clinch premier league status. It's an been an incredible story so far and we continue on our journey with a world famous manager and team that plays the type of football that has been acclaimed and appreciated around the world, long may it continue.... Here's to the next 100 years.
