http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...-talent-like-Harry-Kane-says-FA-chairman.html This article includes a profile showing the proportion of home-grown players in PL squads!! It may or may not be surprising that it is clubs in bottom half of the table that have a greater number of these. The "Saviour" that is Greg Dyke would like the majority to be English! Hurrah for him. In today's Telegraph (cannot find the link) there is a perfect riposte with the headline "Why don't more young English players go abroad?"
It's a fair comment about Harry Kane struggling to get a game and being sent out on loan four times. Its arguable that if Spurs hadn't used him in the Europa league he'd be struggling to get a start in the PL. What does that say about the millions they spent on Soldado?
Again... Raises a lot of questions and debates (rightly so) about the quality of the reserve/U21 teams. If clubs like saints would rather keep players in house to ensure quality control, these players are limited to the quality of the league they play in. Dykes plans from about 6 months ago were ill thought out but well intentioned. But what the answer is, I'm really not sure.
The reason decent English players don't go abroad is because 1) the British are insular and 2) they can make a good living here. European players can pop to the next country and still be home for tea...that little bit of water between us and the continent can seem an insurmountable barrier.
P.s. Like the picture of Fabregas where the penny has dropped....you can't get a penalty against Saints unless one of our players is actually holding your severed leg.
