I've been watching the highlights of the cricket 20/20 World Cup & remember that when 20/20 came in it was said to have saved the game! Despite football seemingly ever popular, there is always that bit of the game that we hate. There was talk back when the US had the WC in '94 that they wanted to make bigger goals. That was laughed at by everyone who loves the traditional game, however since then the traditional game has changed to a beast that many simply dislike! So my question is, if you could do something to improve football, what would it be? Would it be something dramatic like bigger goals & 2 goalies? Or something less like a sin bin for a yellow card?
We should completely scrap the points system to decide leagues. Instead of 3 for a win and one for a draw we should rank the tables purely on goal difference. It would make playing for a draw completely pointless (literally) so would encourage both teams to go for it more. ....and not just because we'd be back in the auto-promotion spots
I always thought that if your team lose you should get half your money back...... At least that way you wouldn't be able to say on the way out "I haven't paid XXX Quid to watch that pile of ****".
For me I wouldn't change anything with league football, whereas with cricket there were failing crowds which needed something new to win new fans, football is well supported so no change required. What I would change is international football. For starters 24 teams at the euros can **** off, back to 16 and a quality tournament. World cup expansion ideas can do one too, 32 is enough. Not sure if it'd work but if like to see some kind of league system in international football, there are far too many **** teams which means endless **** international games outside of tournaments there is little to get excited about, a relegation and promotion type system could improve that
I'd like a video ref for retrospective action so that cheats get banned. I'd also like City to kick those orange and black footballs into the crowd like they used to do in the early 80s
I'm not a fan of 20-20 cricket at all, it's basically the dumbing down of an intelligent game. Football does need some innovative ideas though, the offside rule needs looking at so that even more benefit of the doubt is given to attackers for starters, the game has become too defensive and boring again. When they got rid of the backpass rule at the beginning of the 90's it was a breath of fresh air, too many games I watch now are boring and over-defensive as we find out at the KC most weeks
I always wondered why the penalty/goal areas were changed to a square shapes rather then the original 'double-hooped' shape ? When you consider the centre markings and 22 yard arc are circular. Seems a bit of an anomaly.
I mean for clear cut things. Like mistaken identity or getting booked for diving when you clearly got taken out etc. It seems unfair you can miss games for accumulation of yellows that include obvious errors. You'd obviously need some sort of 'frivilous appeal' thing where you were punished for taking the piss.
The only real alternative would be a full-time, fully professional county league. The fanbases would be huge too, as there would be a lot less teams for fans to support. I'd probably look at a spending cap as well - so each club is allowed to spend the same as every other club, meaning it's less about which club has the most money and then becomes less of a popularity contest - refs, fans, media would all give a lot more fairer/balanced decisions/coverage on each team. I'd also change what is classed as a foul - football is becoming non-contact year on year. You go near them, their down and the ref buys it. It's not as bad in the Championship (though still not brilliant), but even worse in the Premier League. Our recent games against Arsenal reminded me of the thing I dislike most about the Premier League - the bigger teams always get an unfair advantage from referees, despite having the better players and more resources. Their players were going down with minimal to no contact and getting rewarded with a freekick - we were having to be clearly hacked down for the ref to even consider it, and even then we didn't always get a freekick.
The vast majority of football played is already free to view... almost all except the increasingly sanitised and homogenised product of the pro's. From a game originally sustained and maintained by the fans and mostly despised and ignored by the rest, it has been manipulated into a mere brand with no concern for the product beyond it's continued ability to extract money. Any rule changes will only be directed at increasing it's primary function of making money. We will only get the game back if the bubble bursts and it is no longer of interest to the financial parasites. It would be even tougher for assistants to spot offside.
Your bizarre idea wouldn't necessarily lead to attacking football. Keeping a clean sheet would be very useful in helping the goal difference.
Take the power away from the sponsors. Make the champions league a knockout competition of champions with no seeding bias shown to the bigger clubs. If we are to have more than one team in a "Champions" competition then make it what it says on the tin. PL Champions, FA & League Cup winners in the CL. Runners up in the EL - make both CL & EL straight non-seeded knockouts. Make the emphasis of getting into the top flight about prestige & not money. Ban, for life, anybody who mentions that we need to be in the PL because of how much money you get. Execute them if they mention this in the first minute if any conversation. The return of the terrace. Public execution of all agents. The same respect offered to football supporters that is offered to any other group of people attending an entertainment event. Affordable tickets. Get rid of goal line technology & any suggestion of further in-game technical assistance. Public execution of Rupert Murdoch. Sort out the number of **** foreign players employed by clubs who are stifling the development of homegrown players. Sort out grass roots football & coaching of youngsters. Make coaching courses more affordable. Make the money that is provided to women's top flight & international football more appropriate to what it generates. Theres's too much wrong with the game to ever put it back to what it was in the glory days of supporting football, when, even the chance of, winning a trophy was was far more important than finishing 17th. Changing a few rules won't make it better, money, big business & twats trying to play "big business" has ****ed it, for good. Nowadays too many clubs along with their money led whore supporters would rather give up the chance of winning a cup to finish 4th or 17th - "because we need the money" Everything is watered down with the emphasis too far reliant on money & not glory It's nearly time for football to **** off because football & me, we want different things.
If teams are drawing at the 80 min mark an extra ball should be introduced every min until the game is over
Alternatively, scrap the Europa League and bring back the Cup Winners Cup. Champions League should be just League winners, the defending CL winner (should the not win their league) and the winner of the CWC (again, should they not win their league).
3 Changes: The off-side rule needs to go back to the way it was before they started pissing around with it. Cheating generally should be abolished by stringent punishment to individuals and/ or clubs ; including heavy fines, long suspensions and even points deducted for repeat offenders. And when those two are sorted the rules should become a 'Constitution of Football' which can never be altered.
