Found these comments on the internet from neutral supporters, after the 1-1 draw at the SOL. -------------------------------------------------------------------- It amuses me that these two irrelevant teams think the rest of the country care about their silly, pointless little mini regional battle. Win something then the rest of the country may do more than just roll their eyes when they hear of the "fierce rivalry" etc between the teams. --------------------------------------------------- This must be the most over-rated Derby in the world. Theres so much hype and hatred between the teams, and Steve Bruce got sacked for losing one. But in the big picture what does the result actually mean? Have either club won enough trophies to make the hype worthwhile? No they haven't. --------------------------------------------------- Them northern goons should head south and watch the arsenal play spurs, then they will see what a proper derby is like! --------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is it as big a game as we think and does every clubs fans genuinely think their derby is the biggest and most fierce in the country?
Those quotes must be from youngsters that have never visited our region. I think Rangers v Celtic may hold more hatred, but c'mon. London derbies? A load of pish. AND. I'm sick and tired of Manure v Bindippers being called a derby. x
I think most football fans appreciate the rivalry! Imho i think it is in something like this order Old firm Us v mags Hammers v millwall Arse v spuds Manure v pool Manure v mancs Villa v birmingham 2 sheffields Leeds v bradford and/or huddersfield Hibs v hearts This is based on hatred
they're entitled to their opinions I suppose... as am I in thinking they are clearly thick southern scum who are so far up their own arse they are licking their own tonsils from the inside.
Who gives a ****? Ours is the best 'cos we're in it. The trouble is that our recent history is not exactly a litany of success and I can understand the dismissive attitude of some. They're still snotty bastards though.
I have friends in Bristol and believe me they hate each other down there, on a similar scale to us. Although obviously nowhere near as big.
Because some of them simply don't understand the pride & passion that comes with supporting NUFC or ( I assume the same for) SAFC and the true rivalry that comes with it. Some of these kids grow up in areas where every one of their mates supports a different team, often based on who is successful at the time (or was when they were younger and first 'chose' their club). Most of us were born into supporting our club. Our parents were probably the main driver for most of us. Whereas one of the guys I work with has 3 boys and they all 'support' different teams - Chelsea, Man U + Arsenal. While they make fun of each other over results, they don't appear to actually 'care' in the same way most NUFC & SAFC fans do. A defeat is a defeat. It doesn't ruin their week. It's easy to poke fun at others if you're a plastic fan! because it doesn't matter what people say back to you if you don't care. Let them get on with thinking they 'support' their selected team. We know how much our rivalry means and how big the derby matches are to us! So long as we can be friends, poke fun and have a laugh together about results, who cares what these simpletons think.
I've lived all over the country and proper fans always comment on our derby. No-one I've met thinks it's irrelevent
That bolded comment amuses me. Only 5 clubs in this country have won the league title (top division) more than Sunderland. Must all be southerners without doubt as everyone up here knows how much this derby means
Our derby has so much history behind it - going back to the civil war, probably before that. The only other derby I would like to experience the atmosphere at would be Rangers v Celtic. The others are nothing of note. x
In footballing terms the derby means relatively little due to both clubs being crap, unlike the title rivals who's fans these comments obviously come from. However, and a massive however, if both teams happened to play play each other in a Wembley final, the scale of the trouble this would cause for the transport police, Met and other police forces would be impossible to ignore.
Doesn't have to be about the level or amount of trouble, in my mind. It's the feeling you have the day, the month, the months after either crowing or waiting for the chance of revenge. That - to me - is what measures a derby. x
Completely agree with this. Any sensible football fan will recognise that our derby is huge. Anybody who thinks it's irrelevant probably thinks football started in 1992. And I've lived in the South all my life... On behalf of the southern portion of our fine land I'd like to clarify that the opinions listed are not representative!
