Following £7m on Rodriquez, probably around £2.5m for Clyne (tribunal), £1.5m for Gazza, £750k for Davis. If we believe that Buttner is £3m, Lens £7m & Kayal £5m are / have been serious suggestions then that's nearly £27m and we haven't even started on the 2 central defenders & keeper that we'd need in addition. Either this is a serious statement of intent, or loose spending even if we do get serious income in the Premier League. I'd like to believe the former. Views ????
Well we're not signing Buttner and the Lens and Kayal things are just paper talk at the moment, so this is a bit premature.
Also we don't actually know for sure exactly how much we payed for any player. I heard Rodriguez was £6 million and Gazzaniga was closer to £1 million.
I think you might be getting carried away there. Certainly £6/7 million on rodders.. £750000 on Davis, Clyne will be £1.5 million (the highest award made so far) £1.5 million for Gazza makes an actual total of close to £10.5 million. Which is not even using all the money they got up front for Chamber pot. Buttner is unlikely to be a fact any more and the others are pure speculation. Cortese said money had been put aside for investing in the side before he actually got any money for any of the others. So accordingly I would have thought that would have been added to the investment pile. Whether he uses more of it in this window remains to be seen. I suspect we have not seen the last addition.....but you never no with Cortese!
NC is playing a blinder by keeping things secret. Its frustrating for fans sometimes, but then he unearths a gem like Clyne. We are secure and competitive so i'm happy with that.
i thought there was a war chest created if we ever made to the PL (Promised Land) amounting to well over the sum already spent
Kayal won't happen. It's simple logic, we've got players coming through plus already five CMs so it won't happen. People still said last week that the Buttner deal was still on and it was plainly obvious that it wasn't. It's more wishful thinking from some people.
There may be. But i think we need to re establish ourselves for a season to attract higher quality players. To an extent we are gambling a bit on our squad atm, and if they do well this season it will make bigger / better players take more of an interest in us.
There's no upper limit to the amount we will spend, all our deals will be done individually and for however much Nige and Nic thinks they are worth. Anyway as has been said, all these transfers are done in clauses and installments so to say we paid £7m for Rodriguez, £2.5m for Clyne etc is not really accurate.
Trouble is while Cortese has mentioned a "war chest" as you describe it. None of us actually know how much that is likely to be. Not such a bad idea in the scheme of things........As if it had been made public the world and his wife would have wanted a share and as much of it that could be squeezed out of the clubs hands in transfer deals. The same principle applies of course when you sell someone for a tidy sum.......Just try and replace him cheaply. The odd half a million just gets added on even to start discussions as they want their share of it as do all the others.
We don't know because it's in the club's interest to keep it a secret. If people think we're minted they'll ask for silly money. It's pretty clear we're not really limited in this regard though. If we identify a good player we are not afraid to make considerable bids for them. I do think the OP is using quite liberal estimates of prices we've paid though. From what I've heard Rodriguez is closer to £6m, Davis is about £400k and Clyne is very unlikely to be more than a million.
I think there is an upper limit to our spending. In fact I hope there is. Portsmouth showed that a limitless transfer and wage budget is a bad idea...
Over the next few seasons I expect the squad to have a complete overhaul. Obviously, players like Barnard and Forte will be gone, if not in a few weeks, then by January at the latest. No, what I'm talking about are the players who largely got Saints back into the Promised Land, playing in both lower leagues, disappearing over the next couple of seasons. This isn't because they won't be good enough for the PL. They simply won't be good enough for where Saints want to be heading. It's a great shame OXO left 12 months early, because I reckon he may have stayed now. He is one who we would have certainly wanted to take with us all the way. BTW, with the funds and ambition Saints have, I don't see £25M as being an overspend when essentially rebuilding the squad from Lge One. If you want to make up the numbers, then sure spend as little as possible. But Saints aren't in this league for that survival game.
i dont think the limit is on the transfer fee, but the wages demanded by that player. simple rule is that the higher the value of a player- the better that player is- thus he demands higher wages than a cheaper or less talented player
Yeah this is a good point. £20k less a week over a four year contract means you can afford to spend an extra £4 million on the transfer fee after all.
