  1. This is slightly toon related and slightly me ranting about stuff in my life so cut me some slack

I had to fill in a job application form to apply for a job in a hospital ward, and there was a part where you had to write a bit about yourself and your hobbies.. ect.

And i thought i'd mention how i'm passionate about certain things, in this instance, the toon army.

So i thought i'd try to show how enthusiastic and witty i was by adding a metaphor, "I bleed black and white", and followed by, "as i am very passionate about Newcastle United".

I thought this would show that i was passionate about something, and that my personality would appear attractive to them, as they needed someone that was approachable and good with people.

However, i recieved a response via a telephone call, that i didn't get the job, and the person told me it was because i told a sick joke by saying "i bleed black and white", as they thought i was making fun of people who cut themselves?

I tried to explain what it really meant, but they said i wasn't being sensitive to people with those sorts of problems, and couldn't give me the job?

Is this a real reason to reject my application?

Don't you know? Thats one of the phrases used on suicide forums to represent cutting yourself in a group.

    Your sick.

Yes, forget the metaphors and just say you're passionate. If you're applying at a hospital do not EVER say 'I bleed black and white'.

Nice bullshit reasoning by them there, but at least you got a call back... Barely any employers seem to reply at all these days, and when they do it tends to be just a generic email.

lol I don't often take pleasure in the discomfort of others, couldn't but chuckle at this though!

I see your thinking behind it, but I don't think you could've chosen a less appropriate metaphor for wanting to work on a hospital ward!

It'd be like an anti-terrorist police officer stating that he loves "the explosion of noise when fans blast out the blaydon races"

You're autistic Tash. You have to be. You must be man.

What a ****ing dumbass thing to do.

Who the hell cares if you're passionate about NUFC? This is A JOB APPLICATION FOR A HOSPITAL. They couldn't give a single solitary **** if you're passionate about football. You tried to show "how enthusiastic and witty I was". Are you for real son? What did you expect them to do while they were reading it? Have a chuckle and say "wow this guy is witty, we must have him as an employee on our ward".

It wouldn't make your personality attractive. It wouldn't make it very unattractive, as you're incapable of being formal and professional for just one bloody minute while you write out an application.

"I bleed black and white". Jesus christ come on man. It's a hospital. Don't piss around. Why couldn't you have just said "I'm very passionate about football and Newcastle United". Just be cool instead of trying to be witty and end up being a berk.

And actually, for those who haven't heard the term, it could easily refer to someone cutting themselves. It can insinuate that if you cut yourself, you would bleed black and white.

A tiny measly morsel of common sense should have told you that this was a bad idea to put on a formal job application for a public service sector job.

Tash, in what way did you figure that being a football die hard would lend itself to a position of care and responsibility towards vulnerable people? Regardless of how ridiculously pedantic your PC faux-pass was, it was a stupid thing to allude to on a job application, surely you have something more suitable to stick on a CV. The job market is so competitive at the moment, there must be thousands of football fans applying for jobs, unless you're applying for a position as a stadium tour guide it isn't going to help you out much.

Did you seriously think that writing that on a job application form would do anything other than hinder your chances? I find it really hard to believe anybody could be this insane, especially to then post it online presuming others would agree that it was odd that it got rejected.

Always nice to see passion Tash mate but probably not the best way to express it in a job application, especially for a medical job! People can be incredibly over PC and sometimes it's best to... 'not' be yourself, so to speak, in such situations!
Rather unlucky though, as it still is a particularly picky excuse to not give you the job.
Hard luck Tash and hope the job hunt goes well!
