How Dean Holden's first 20 Bristol City games compare to Lee Johnson and Steve Cotterill's Statistical look at the season so far, the new head coach's tenure and more. While plenty of Bristol City supporters have derided recent results and performances - and the last games have not been good with just one goal in five matches and few chances created - it does come on the back of an unprecedented period of English football. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, an enlarged 2019/20 season and Euro 2020 being concreted in for next June, these are strange times: the last nine games have come across 28 days for City, and 29 for everyone else. "I'm in my 41st season as a manger and I've never come across anything like this," Neil Warnock told The Athletic recently, after the Middlesbrough boss went over and thanked his players for their efforts across possibly the most congested period of English football in modern times. "We're going into unknown territory, even someone of my experience. I honestly don't know what will happen." The first 11 games of this season were played across 58 days, followed by nine across 28 for the Robins. Game after game across the relentless Championship. And it's taken its toll at Ashton Gate: the team is tired and injuries have mounted up. It is of course the same for every club and these tough times are to be navigated. So how has Dean Holden done so far, at a rare rest point and with the halfway point in sight? 20 games played Nine wins, three draws, eight defeats 20 goals scored, 21 conceded 30 points taken And in comparison, here's how Lee Johnson did in his first 20 league games (starting with City's 2-1 win over Ipswich Town on 13 February 2016, with the 20th game being a home loss against Newcastle United 0-1). Nine wins, three draws, eight defeats - exactly the same record! And by extension, here's Steve Cotteril''s record - albeit in the league below, of course, and taking over a team in a worse position. Eight wins, seven draws, five defeats: 31 points There's a long way to go this campaign and Holden has already experienced highs - twice nominated for the manager of the month award - and lows - with calls for him to lose his job already on social media. As we move forward, here are some other succulent stats that caught our eye, and perhaps illustrate where the team needs to improve this season to make their aims. City rank joint sixth in the league for goals from open play (16) but joint 24th - last - for goals from set-pieces (2) Bristol City have made the fewest crosses in the Championship this season (231) But when they do they've been generally accurate: 6th most accurate in the league - 35.5% City now rank joint 17th for chances created this season so far City rank 11th for Expected Goals this season - essentially how good the chances created have been (23.16 xG) Rank 22nd for shots taken (just 187), but 15th for shots taken from open play (130) Rank 18th for Expected Goals Against (27.94) Stats taken from WyScout or WhoScored.com. Wycombe Wanderers up next, followed by Luton and a difficult trip to Brentford. "I feel tired. Bloody hell, it's hard. The night before is hard, so many games," said Warnock of the period before and he's probably not along in feeling that way. https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/how-dean-holdens-first-20-4824271
We all know the Championship is relentless. Any team that has a trusted and capable squad of players to cope with any eventuality and injury will do well.
AMAZING I ought to get a job with the Evil Post, YET AGAIN a couple of weeks later from my posts they hive off another of them... starting from as long ago Feb 2016 it enables a statistic to fit in with a an intention to "weight" the result ... Dean took over at end of last season not start of this one … that would be the HONEST starting point as LEE TOOK OVER HIS FIRST games midway through a season not a start fantastic article dressing mutton up as lamb ….. lets have a level playing field .. not a can I lick your ……. LEE ... LDWWWD 11 pts WDDDWL.. 9 pts WDDWDL 9pts W W ..6pts …. tot 35 pts LLLL WLWWWW LWLLL DEAN WWWWDL 13 pts DLLWWW 10 pts DLWLWL. 7 pts L L ..0 pts …. tot 30pts Wycombe Luton Brentford PNE .. Norwich Hudders ???? Why start at start of a full new season [ not a point that makes a currently lesser static look good ] … because the quality of the squad is so much different and the players are an overlap … one would expect DH to have better players than Lee because we had a transfer window to upgrade those that were not good enough when he took over. AS for games coming thick and fast … it is the same for all ….a level playing field …..
It's just a comparison about their first 20 games as a new manager, if you don't like the Bristol Post don't read it or any of their articles, why the hell would they need to copy you with the resouces they have got, I keep saying it, this is our local press, our local source of information, people on this forum are nationwide, some worldwide, they find the information supplied about their football team interesting and useful. We know you don't like the post, some of us do, if you don't like it, don't read it but give up the continual critique, it's becoming repetitve and boring and I will continue to use the newspaper continually in the future.
Stats are similar but have to be overlayed against the position, and division the club was in, both SC and LJ had to steady and turn around the ship; whereas DH has taken over a stable an established side, so you could argue theoretically be doing better?
no need to lose your rag … I have stated many many times how appreciative of your posting articles from the EP / FL ETC I am, you often state this board is for discussion and opinion, should you not like what is written don't read it, now you are saying DO NOT HAVE AN OPINION, do not comment on it, do not read it, you find the comments boring, "well you have said if you do not like it do not read it". I do find it strange though, probably a coincidence, a number of trends /stats I post are replicated a while later in the post, as you say they have resources and researchers, and really I suppose it is only to be expected they will use similar trends …..
Believe me I haven't lost my rag, it's my patience is beginning to get a bit frayed, opinions and discussions are always welcomed but when someone repeatedly claims the local press is continually hiving off their articles and making claims they should be employed by them it makes me think that person is in cloud cuckoo land. Your opinions of me don't really matter, I just like fair balance of information sources, like them or dislike they will continue to be used, so criticise the content by all means but at least respect the source.
it is all in the same pot I sometimes refer to the EVENING POST with EVIL, but it seems nowadays that tag is not pertinent as the reason for it, [and there was others who said the same] was the adverts took over and made the reading of it difficult, to the point on my system it used to lock. I read a number of articles from the post not linked from here., not606, regarding local issues or news features, so it is not like I do not like the POST. BRISTOL LIVE is very informative …. OH PS I don't dislike anyone irrespective of any idiosyncracies they may have good /bad or otherwise
Good enough, we understand each other then, I respect that, in my very minor role I only care about balance on the forum, I am always willing to step down and give another person a chance, the door is open I have had a good run, maybe my time is due to end, I only need to be told.
Keep it going Wiz, ya doing a fine job....efforts respected..Our views may not always agree but life would be so boring if we all thought the same....even though I am right most of the time!!
