How cheeky is cheeky?

Discussion in 'Tottenham Hotspur' started by Hoddle is a god, Jan 14, 2014.

  1. QPR midfielder Joey Barton, 31, caused a storm on Twitter by cheekily suggesting he was a certainty to win the Ballon d'Or.
    (Source: Irish Independent)

Hm. I'm not sure that Joey Barton suggesting he's in for the Ballon d'Or is capable of either causing a storm or being cheeky, since it's so obviously a piss-take. But this got me thinking as to what can actually be counted as "cheeky" in football.

Our making a bid for Mata or Rooney would, almost certainly, be cheeky, whereas making a move for, say, Luke Shaw almost certainly would not.

What are the cheekiest things you've seen in football, in recent times?

Vertonghen's tackle earlier in the season was pretty cheeky

  3. In recent times, Fergie hiring the ref to play as his 12th man was fairly cheeky. Appointing Moyes to balls things up for them wasn't quite so cheeky.

Cristiano Ronaldo voting Radmael Falcao as the best player in his Ballon d'Or vote was cheeky - even Marca wouldn't think of that!

  5. Actually, being cheeky is quite a difficult thing to pull off successfully.

Perez tapping up Bale was a little cheeky. Having said that I'd class driving into his car in a Madrid underpass as pretty cheeky too. Perhaps we should try it.

I had Barton as a certainty for the Balloon d'Or.

As Nietzsche said: "The demand to be loved is the greatest of all arrogant presumptions."

Just before he said: "There's no tw*t like that cocky, chirpy little Scouse footballing tw*t."

Yeah, but the spammers don't do a very good impersonation. I mean who'd fall for that one?....

Or AVB, who's been masquerading as a world class football manager for a few years now!...

    This is most certainly cheeky...

...whereas this is putting a bunch of no-hopers out of their misery...

    Walcott's 2-0 gesture was cheeky.

Adebayor's knee slide in front of goon fans was more than cheeky (and much funnier)

  18. A point of order...

Some of these things certainly sound strange slightly ridiculous, even - but can they genuinely be classed as cheeky?

For example, Whinger saying that Arsenal can win the league is plainly ridiculous, but I wouldn't say it was cheeky.

Man City having Jim and Jeff Whitley in their squad at the same time was cheeky - the kit man must've had a nervous breakdown trying to figure out that one!
