Although nobody could defend his actions, you have to say that prison is a bit harsh.

With no previous convictions and bearing in mind nobody, including the Bud the Horse, were injured, you have to think he's been made an example of...

Not to bring another animal into it, but scapegoat springs to mind. Uncanny timing that too. Anyone would think it has all been timed to make fans think twice about misbehaving this Sunday. Seems very harsh but I couldn't pretend to care as the bloke is a simpleton. When you compare it to how other acts of violence have been dealt with, and other acts which have inflicted harm, it seems over the top. Not the most consistent justice system we have but in this case I'm not really fussed.

Fully deserved jail time! He basically attacked the police! Plus attacking any defenceless animal is such a scummy thing to do and everyone involved in harming animals shoulld be jailed!

Assaulting the horse is seen as an assault on the Police so you can expect harsh punishments. Add to that the fact it was during a riot, he pleaded not guilty (and tried to hide his face) and showed no remorse for what he had done until the point at which it was clear he was going to be found guilty then he deserves a custodial sentence. The timing of it cannot be a coincidence and its a strong message to send out the week of the derby so yes I think that he may have been given the maximum rather than a 'normal' amount - not that there is such a thing for this.

I suspect no-one is defending what he did or that he is being punished but some seem to be getting sucked into the "you don't get that punishment for..." line of reasoning. In comparison to some other crimes this can look like a harsh judgement on the face of it but you have to judge each case on its merits and this one is due time in prison, the length may be attributable to publicity but irrespective of that he would probably have been staring at the inside of a cell around now.

Leez I hear the point you're making and you aren't the only one to state that other people get less for having done more but you just have to consider whether you think this case deserved jail-time really. I'd say it did.

As regards persistent domestic burglars, for a third offense (and after) a person has to be given at least 3 years. The average sentence length for domestic burglary is just under 2 years (it has steadily crept upwards from about 18 months over the last decade).

The Mackem board have managed to spin this topic out for 7 pages! Must be more fun for them than talking about their team.

I do think the moron deserves jail mind, if just for his pathetic attempts to explain himself afterwards. What a tosser.

The sentence is certainly harsh compared to dozens of cases, daily, up and down the country.

But how can you have much sympathy for this man? His attack on the policeman's horse had huge national coverage and did great damage to the reputation of the club and city.

So the horse did press charges then... I wish I could have been on the jury to hear him give evidence!

Separate issue, but why do police even need horses? This isn't planet of the apes <laugh>

They have long been outdated by the motor-vehicle, so are the MET having severe cutbacks or what? It would have been far funnier seeing that lad picking out shards of headlight from his hands.

They plod around, ****ting everywhere on matchdays (which isn't picked up, yet I'd get a spot fine if my dog does a tiny little plop next to their massive dollops), and to be honest, are an unnecessarily intimidating presence.
