Anyone here hoping these Defoe to sunderland Rumours are true? If you told me this a few years back then i would of been all against it but Defoe has been misfiring badly now for 18months and since his 5 goals against Wigan a few seasons back he has gone on a downward spiral so i say let's cash in on him now and get the top strikers we have been craving. Although i think Defoe has been a great servant to this club and the fans will always love the guy ( including me) i still believe he's just not good enough for where spurs want to be ( back in the champions league). Now i know Sunderland have come out and said " we won't be bidding for Defoe and Nzogbia" but the Sunderland fans are basically saying don't believe a word of what the sunderland board are saying. In other words they believe Defoe and Nzogbia could be sunderland players very soon. Personally i hope it's true so it can finally kickstart our movement in the purchasing of some quality upfront..... something we been missing for years since Berbatov. Although i wouldn't want Gyan as our main striker signing, i still would be very happy with Defoe out and Gyan in. Gyan is a much better striker than Defoe and would thrive off the spurs midfield. Gyan, Leandro and Rossi as our striker signings? Maybe i'm being over Optimistic but yes please
It would depend upon how much we'd get for him, who we'd replace him with and whether they'll take Hutton off our hands as part of it! I don't think that he got a real run in last season's system, though I'm not convinced that it would suit him. He started the season carrying an injury, which he then aggravated with England and never seemed to get back into the swing of things after a long lay-off.
I confess, I won't be too unhappy to see Defoe leave, BUT ONLY IF we replace him with someone decent.
I'd be happy if he went and was replaced somebody who a. had started shaving and b. was better. Now if Crouch went... If Keane went ...
But what if no one is prepared to buy either of those two? Levy may have no choice but to sell Defoe or Pav, in order to raise the funds that he appears to be lacking, in order to buy New Striker.
I agree that Defoe is probably a more preferred striker than Keane or Crouch to potential suitors but surely someone in the PL would take Keane off our hands for £5million. Stoke are buying Cartlon Cole for £6.5 million and no way is he better than Crouch or Keane and isn't much younger.
As far as Harry can tell, we only have two strikers: Defoe and Crouch. If either leaves he'll definately sign someone else to replace them. If Pav or Keane leave, he might not. Therefore, I'd prefer us to sell Defoe than Keane, TBH.
If Keane isn't sold he'll definitely go out on loan, as there is no way he's even going to get a game next season. Same with quite a few players. Levy may think its worth while paying the wages of the likes of Hutton, Bentley, Niko, Dos Santos and Keane and send them all out on loan in order to put them back in the shop window for teams in the hope that they'll all do well enough to encourage better bids in the January window.
He wouldn't be paying their wages if they go out on loan. I doubt Levy'd do that anyway. I think he'll be happy to sell in this window.
That all depends on who these players go on loan to. Not all the clubs that might be willing to take any of these players would be able to stump up the silly wages we pay them, so we may end up pay at least some of the wages. And, yes, I absolutely agree with you, that Levy would rather sell these players. However, my point is that, in the event that we don't sell any of them due to the fact that clubs come forward with stupidly low bids, Levy may be prepared to hold on to them and send them out on loan in order for them to prove their worth in the January window. Levy isn't known for letting players go cheaply. His problem, however, is that he has a manager who continually undermines him by shooting off his mouth and letting the world know that we are desperate to be rid of these players. If a club knows that we are desperate to sell a player they are hardly going to offer top dollar for him.
Levy trying to get top dollar seems to have gotten us into this current situation of having too many "deadwood" players. He probably could have offloaded Bentley, Keane and GDS last year, but you just know he would overvalue them. All 3 of them went on loan and now, ironically, are probably all worth less then we could have got for them last season. I would hope he's learned from that... And, you're right, Harry isn't the best salesman.
SolidSpur... I agree, sending the likes of Bentley and Keane on loan did absolutely nothing to boost their value, and probably confirmed that they are worth just about what people are now offering for them. At the same time, they proved that they should never wear the lillywhite shirt ever again.
