Blimey, seems it's pretty much a done deal. Will be great to see Holty back in the Premier League, but seems a rather desperate move by Villa - think he's only scored a couple for Wigan.
If you didn't know anything about the history its a really weird transfer, a striker at a mid-table championship club who has been told he's free to leave gets loaned by a Premier league team
Seems like desperate from Lambert. If the rumours about Wes and Pilks are true, it's like he's trying to recreate his success here. I never thought Lambert could be that kind of guy. I always saw him as a 'dump the past, head for the future' sort or person.
Kozak is out for the season, Benteke (despite scoring tonight) is way out of form and he needs a big man up top. Holt is by far the cheapest option you could think of, and it seems to be in the hope he can rediscover his form from 2 years ago. To me it just shows how small Viila's transfer kitty is. For example, Lewis Grabban has played as a lone striker in the championship, and is about the 11th top scorer in the league. He's younger so got resale value, probably on low wages and I can't see Bournemouth being able to turn down £3m for him. Carlton Cole is available on a free, and seems happy to have short contracts, yet presumably his wages are too high. Instead he's going for an older striker who's had injury issues this season and currently isn't even first choice for Wigan. Promising that the chances of any of their signings being a significant upgrade on their current squad are low.
Lambert certainly seemed to get the best out of Holty, didn't Hughton play him in a slightly different role to Lambert that seemed to restrict him somewhat? Still, good news for us if this goes through, because he would obviously have scored against us when we play Wigan at home mid-march, now it looks like he could be scoring for Villa when you play them at the beginning of March. I hope that he has some really extravagant goal celebration ready for that eventuality.
Lambert's celebration will be unbearable, inevitable wes assist for holt goal, can see it now. On a side note, I now see wes' valuation to be well over £10m, we can't afford to reunite them 3
Lambert knows how to get Holt going though. It's only two years ago Holt got double figures in Prem because Lambert was using him correctly. I think it's a good move move for him, and I don't begrudge him whatsoever for it. Can't get a sniff at Wigan and get offered to go to Villa and play for the manager who got the very best out of you. No brainer.
Also makes sense of the Wes rumours. He and Holty worked wonderfully together. Please please we are not handing Villa their relegation lifeline.
Did anyone listen to BBC R5L last night? Some quotes from fans texting and phoning in: Clueless, tactically inept, boring, one dimensional, not the man to take the club forward, going backwards, will get us relegated ........ Familiar? And who were they talking about? That's right, Paul Lambert. Not that any notice should be taken of them; just illustrates the fact that every club has them.
Some players follow managers, that's part of life in football. We have just signed one of CH's past players in Guteirrez like we did when we signed Redmond and Bassong. If Holt score against us I just hope he doesn't celebrate and shows some respect like Ronaldo did against Man Utd .
I don't for a second think he's past it. Let's hope he doesn't make us look too silly for getting rid.
He's still capable - with the right motivation he'll do a good job and Lambert is the right man to motivate Holty. Good move for both parties dammit !!
