I think that's twice in two weeks. The legend of Holt continues Quote: There's still a lot to be said for good old-fashioned British centre-forward play. Holt led the line in a Norwich attack that gave the Everton defence untold problems, upsetting defenders and never allowing them to think that a challenge wasn't imminent. He deserved his well-taken goal. Did you know? Excluding penalties, has the second best chance conversion rate in the Premier League this season (32%), behind Bolton's Ivan Klasnic (33%).
If holt played for one of the top six, the BBC would have been wan@ing over his goal on Saturday. Very nimble and had similarities to agueros goal against us (look how they loved that) I guess we accept we are unfashionable Holt continues to prove the doubters wrong and is in a rich vein of form. Surely our best buy in at least a decade, maybe longer if his goals help us stay up Lawro described him as a battering ram. Still struggles to say anything nice about us
Unfashionable Max? We won the coolest shirt in the Lg comp by a landslide, we are probably the least hated too
His goal on Saturday was pure class. When Morison dinked it in to him it looked impossible to do anything but to win a corner or lay it off for an onrushing midfielder (of which none were to be seen!) so to shield the ball so deftly then avoid the attentions of three defenders before dragging the ball back and shooting past the goalkeeper and defender on the line into the tiniest place which was the only place a goal could be scored was quite simply stunning! I jumped out of my seat it was so god damn good. Yet as soon as I was reflecting on what he had achieved I know instantly it would be glossed over. If RVP had scored it on the other hand we would never have heard the end of it!
i described his goal at the time as world class and got shot-down by a host of binners on twitter (quite why they were watching a norwich match while their own team were playing a home game is beyond me) but i stand by that having seen it again on motd... if that goal had been scored by david silva people would be showing it for years. to be fair, i thought motd were pretty generous to us on saturday night. we were outplayed for long spells by everton who will feel hard done by but they still took the time to praise our defensive efforts which were excellent (for once) at goodison
I could understand him being annoyed with Fellaini, but I was horrified at his reaction! He was indeed, a very lucky boy!
And had the elbow been spotted - or made more of by a writhing-in-agony Belgian, Holt would have been sent off and gone from hero to zero in five seconds.
My thread of last week Grant Holt - A reassessment - touched on the points raised here.Without of course wishing to criticise Lambert I think with hindsight possibly his only mistake so far in the entire season was not starting Holt for those games. It seems to me that you can sum up Holt in one word -finishing.Put in a good aerial cross to the opposition box and now think of a Premiership forward you would prefer top have in there. The thirty five million quid Geordie is quite handy in the air and I would have him as second choice. As has been mentioned that saturday goal shows he's not a one trick pony either. The rolling back of the ball under the foot and the instant turn was quite simply sublime.Yes,quite like Aguero's against us,but I would argue superior because Holt had less space. Why Holt is becoming iconic at Norwich is I feel because his rise mirrors that of the club.He came at the nadir of our fortunes and, aong with PL,has really been the motivation for what has happened here. And it gets better. If Holt had been some rising star we would have every top half Premiership club tapping him up by now. Thanks to people like Lawrenson he will stay where he is.I have watched Norwich for forty years come 2012 and I can honestly say I can't recall a single person, player or manager, who has had a bigger effect on the club's fortunes. As for the Belgian,it takes two to tango and I think you will find he whacked Holt first, all the same it was unwise.
yep, he was lucky not to see red for that. not a clever thing to do, although i should add that holt was the one who walked away with a black eye. probably both should have seen red
Maybe in the spirit of Holt's "bustling" 1970's style of play the odd thrown punch just adds to the air of nostalgia.
..........i got the impression the ref saw the WHOLE incident which was started by felliani, and decided to ignore it as it was tit for tat.
well if the ref did see it he got the decision wrong! both elbows were red cards by the letter of the law. nobody wants to see players sent off but thems the rules...
I don't mind the media not being obsessed with the goal, unless it was someone like Aguero, as it keeps Holt out of the spotlight. Suarez would easily have one of the highest chance to conversion rate if he would stop being an idiot, he missed loads of great opportunities against us though. I'm surprised Van Persie hasn't got the highest. Good statistic for Holt to have. Is the elbow incident one of those 'luck will even out over the season' moments as it could have easily been a red card? Also. read in the Telegraph today that there are critics of our style of play using the aerial and physical threat of Holt and Morison, one of those being Ba. If it works it's fine and we haven't been too physical. We have 10 goals from set-pieces and 10 headed goals, that's one of our strengths so why not use it?
nfcwonky - can you post a link to the telegraph article - just been over there but can't find it. Cheers
Listening to gough and durham on talks***e earlier and they were calling the goal pure class and were calling for him to have a chance in an england shirt, also stubbs and houghton at lunch were saying the exact same thing. people are starting to take notice, of our players and club in general but only slightly which does me fine Would people also agree with me to say that... holt would not be holt this year if he didnt have morison up top with him, i think they have made a real good strikeforce and i personally feel he would struggle in the role morison was playing on his own!!?? If wolves defence is as shaky as it has been and we go with moro and holty again i think we could be in for one hell of a night.
It seems to me that the current team is a mix of Ollie's Blackpool and Pulis' Stoke. That's why they don't like it up 'em. They were sweet on Blackpool because of the attack attack attack philosophy that looked so good but ultimately proved (sadly) fragile.Pulis has put together a big powerful team that can handle the Premier league by unconventional, and what many consider aggressive means. What they hate is that there isn't really an antidote to it and Holt and Morison are classic smash and grab boys.I'm loving it,the best season ever IMO for entertainment. Can't wait to see MickMac's long face....
Cruyff, what you say is true regards different styles. And this is exactly what i have been banging on about how the national team should play, instead of trying to copy everybody else and having an inferiority complex. We are England, and this is the style that we play!
