Mauricio Pochettino believes Roy Hodgson is considering calling up more Southampton players to the England squad in the future, following Rickie Lambert's debut and goal on Wednesday night. Pochettino told BBC Solent, "I had a chance to speak with Roy Hodgson ahead of the game against Real Sociedad. He didn't just ask me about Rickie Lambert, he asked me about other players so it shows that they are in contention." So, who's going to be the next one? I would've thought Clyne deserves a look-in, what with Glen Johnson about. They seem to like Kyle Walker though. I guess Luke Shaw may get a chance if an injury hits Baines or Cole and he is actually not injured for once during his other England duties.
Lallana, Shaw, Clyne and Cork I'd imagine. Although he might have been asking because he's taking over the u21s for a game. Lallana really should get capped soon, LW is our worst spot in my opinion. We play an out of form ST there currently (welbeck) while our other option is Chamberlain (who is actually a CAM). The less said about Young and Downing the better.
Pretty sure you'll find he came through the academy as a CAM, he only got into the team because we had an opening on the wing and he had pace. Furthermore Wenger (and possibly the Ox) has stated that he seems his as a CAM.
He did start out as a CM, hence why he is a bit bulky and stocky for a winger. In all honesty, he could probably do a job anywhere across the midfield, be it as an AMC or a winger.
What exactly did Welbeck do wrong on Wednesday? I thought he had an excellent game personally, certainly on that form Lallana wouldn't get into the side ahead of him.
His form was appalling even before he got injured. Until he gets back his form he shouldn't be anywhere near the England squad.
Young is still on another level to Lallana. Man United's first choice left mid and certainly will be England's when he returns.
Andy Townsend also thinks Rickie Lambert is an astute and technically excellent player who well deserved his belated call-up. Guess quite a few of us agree with Townsend, then.
Welbeck is ok bordering on ordinary. He ran around a lot on Wednesday, most of it in his own half. He doesn't scream "goal threat" to me and could well slip into Heskey territory because he "works hard".
