What do you do with your spare time? I don't mean drinking, Super! I've really taken to colouring-in: Zen patterns and the like. I collect coasters, football albums and old books. History is a pastime and a job, and I love to paint pictures of castles, churches and other captivating scenery. Gardening has somehow become a pleasure over the last year, and there is nothing more soothing than watching and listening to the birds. And I have now honed the skill of making bread, buns and cakes. From Hell-raiser to dough-raiser. Over to you.
I direct Plays. I am putting one on the 4th 5th and 6th of July at The Progress Hall, Admiral Seymour Road, Eltham SE9. It is called The Maintenance Man by Richard Harris. I am also heavily into Gardening, I did a RHS course in Plant Propagation last Year. The Great Outdoors is also a passion, I am now a member of English Heritage and The National Trust. The wife and I will travel the Country visiting various places this Summer. Next stop York. Music plays a big part in my life and will be going to the Cambridge Folk Festival. Apart from all that I don't do much.
I enjoy writing. I have quite a few novels on the go. Guess one day soon I'll try and get them published. I know some proof readers, and the one that I have completed, they enjoyed it. I like travelling, am always jetting off to places, and am thinking of the places I ain't been and go there. With the exception of South America and Asia, I've been most places. I recently spent about £600 on a telescope, because Space interest me. Only problem is, I have no idea how to set it up. If anyone here knows, that'll be helpful. I need to calibrate and align the lenses; thought it'll be a nice interesting hobby to meet new people, maybe an intelligent woman. I don't think I'm your typical thirty-something year old!
You don't want them too intelligent. I will go along with what Jerry Hall said that men require from a Woman. A Whore in the Bedroom, a gourmet Chef in the Kitchen and a Mother to his Kids.
I was never really interested in history until I got into folk music, well it's more social history, but you can get a different insight into the history of subjects like working conditions, transportation, military conflicts, class structure, seafaring, how young ladies should stay out of trouble etc. The oldest song I know, Sir Patrick Spens, dates back to the 14th century, but thankfully was rewritten and much improved by Sir Walter Scott. The history of jazz is fascinating, and full of great characters. And a;so, like Dickp, I am into gardening, have an allotment, and am in English Heritage. Also the Ramblers, and the Labour Party. I brew my own bitter, about 45p a pint and get through a 5 gallon barrel in about a month. Not forgetting Not606 of course...............................................
i do parkruns (parkrun.org) on saturday mornings at avery hill depending on the boy sleeping through (he's one). also do runs in greenwich park when they're on. like my netflix too - my tip if you're interested is "bloodline". best show i've seen in a long while.
It's bad that whilst opening this I was going to mention my love of spending my spare time in a watering hole. I guess my main hobbie is charlton. A lot of spare time is taken up with work, and travel with work. Not that I get much time to see any of the places. But a change in jobs means I have the month of June off, and less travel going forward! Gotta love gardening leave Following on from SIG I also enjoy my Netflix subscription. I download as many films as possible on top of that. Sounds pretty boring when you put it all on paper/screen
nope (not boring), i'm into downloading films or streaming them (movietube.cc or yify.tv). with a small kid in the house we rarely get out late and babysitters are hard to come by.
We're quite a cultured lot aren't we? I too am into writing. I used to run. Relatively well received satirical blog and have released an eBook before. I mainly write satirical and surreal comedies and horrors (in the vein of JG Ballard and Roald Dahl). I have an anthology of short stories out soon on eBook and am writing novella at the moment. Outside of that I like drinking too; I lover discovering new Micropubs. Then I'm into snooker, clothes and gigs (music and comedy). I'm a bit of a comedy obsessive. I also love history (specifically industrial revolution, Victorian wars and Irish independence). I also have an addiction to Oxygen.
I've got a 10" telescope which came semi dismantled, and took hours to construct, but now shows me the delights of space in the rare moments I have the time and energy to go looking. Mind you, I could'nt find that comet that came drifting through the solar system in february and march. I like music, though David Sylvian has dragged me into stuff I would'nt have even classed as music twenty years ago. I read a lot of history books, but need some fiction to lighten up, so I'm just finishing rereading James Clavell's Shogun. I like travelling but loathe flying. No gardening. It defeated me so I have artificial lawn now. And I also bake scones, sponge cakes and stuff, when the fit takes me.
I used to play golf to a 12 handicap, but it was a sad day when my clubs went up to the loft. I recently moved near a golf course, and the clubs have moved down to the garage.
My summertime hobby is looking for rare and endangered species of tiny stature. I have a high powered telescope for this purpose. This can be a frustrating hobby despite the expensive equipment - despite a prolonged search, I have still not spied Reams' brain
My youngest is just starting a job as an assistant curator at the regimental museum of the Yorkshire museum, just opened, haven't had to for a look see yet. Castle museum is fantastic to. If rocks and pots are your thing then it's the Yorkshire museum you want. Yorvik is a bit of a theme park. The Mrs said the chocolate museum was very good. Enjoy ur trip. Whatever you do. PEA What do you do for a living that involves history?
Independent researcher and copy-editor for novelists, production companies, faculties, heritage trusts, websites and history-based publications. I have in excess of 70 regular clients and am able to work from home and in the field on a 50/50 basis. I've written a series of Black Death-based murder mysteries, which have recently been bought by a successful publishing house. My first two novels (written under my pen name) are doing well and provide a decent income. As another side-line I create crosswords for a number of publications, including a popular Sunday newspaper supplement. I gave up a well-paid job with local government and took the plunge, but I feel it has been worth the risk. I'm paid to travel and see artefacts not normally on show to the public. A passion for history and language have secured a decent life for my family, but I still remain the uneducated urchin from a Thamesmead council estate.
As a lover of historical crime fiction (Sansom , etc.) pm me your pen name. I will swell your coffers by giving your scribbling a try.
