Is history important for a football club? Are successes of 50 years ago still relevant today? Would you swap 5 trophies won decades ago for one this year? Do past successes make you feel better about yourself and your club? Many thanks, Peter.
Is history important for a football club? Yes because it defines how big that club is. Sadly, Birmingham City are not a big club and never will be
That is very true. I don't really care that Blues don't have a history, so I'm asking to find out if history is important to clubs with history. Would you swap your history for ours if it meant that you could compete at the top of the league and win trophies?
I think it is different for everyone. For me, they don't mean a thing. I wouldn't swap a trophy in the past, because I can't, but in any case the past is meaningless. I support Arsenal, because I always have. As I would support them, even if they lost every game, trophies are fun, but not important. For me trophies are only important in the context that we have won a lot of games and therefore I am happy more often through a given year.
Excepting you're not competing at the top of the league (the big one, anyway) and you don't really win trophies either. You've won 1 trophy in about just under 50 years. The question you ask is a bit silly, really. People may not agree with me here, but from a hypothetical perspective, I don't think many people would or should swap their club's history for another's - regardless of what club a person supports, they should always be proud of the achievements that club have done themselves and shouldn't envy others. Whether it's an individual match which bring back great memories or winning a trophy which was a famous day in your club's career, you support that club and you are part of that history. It's what those players, fans and management have earned themselves. ''Swapping your club's history'' as you so delightfully put it, defeats the purpose of supporting that club, in my view.
its all hyperthetical. Arsenal have a tremendous history. I for one want to ensure, by encouraging us to protest that the Club does whatever it can, that it continues. Mediocrity is not an option.
This thread wasn't about Blues. I didn't suggest anywhere that Blues were competing at the top of the league (although we are) or that we win trophies (although we do).
