Relatives of the Liverpool supporters who died in the Hillsborough disaster are examining previously unseen documents about what happened.

The 96 fans died after a crush on the terraces of Sheffield Wednesday's ground on 15 April 1989.

Many relatives believe more lives could have been saved and hope the papers will shed new light on events.

Sheffield Wednesday issued an apology on Wednesday morning to all the families whose relatives were involved.

The club said on its website: "Throughout the compilation stage, the club has worked closely with the panel and the other donating organisations to ensure that, in line with the ethos of maximum disclosure, we have been totally transparent.

"The club would like to offer our sincere condolences and an apology to all the families who have suffered as a consequence of the tragic events of 15 April 1989."

I remember it unfolding on the telebox from my sleepy suburb in North Belfast with utter horror. Hopefully today the families of those who died will get closure. Was it drunk fans? Incompetant Police? A mixture of both? (My view)

    Sleep tight the 96 <rose>

I was at a Scottish Cup semi-final. Rangers v St Johnstone at the old Darkhead. Game finished 0-0. We were heading home when we first heard of the scousers pick-pocketing the dead on the pitch.

I was at that game too, think I went to the replay aswell. Was nearly a crush at the first game after it finished at the wee brick opening, thinking back, the piggery really was/is a ****hole.

What we also must remember is how those 96 souls are far more important and worthy than those poor unmentionable Wop saps murdered in Belgium.

I saw a programme on tele last night celebrating Kenny Dogleashs's career at Anfield. Went into great depth about Hillsborough but glossed over Heysel.

And to think The Sun is still the biggest selling newspaper in Liverpool.

Not correct. He would have been 11 when my ma was lucky enough to get pregnant with me and we all know Lenny stated in his autobiography that he didn't hit puberty until he was 17.

    Nice try.

1244: The PM says the report is "black and white" in concluding "Liverpool fans were not the cause of the disaster".

1244: The Prime Minister said the independent panel had found the safety of the crowds at Hillsborough had been "compromised at every level".

For what it's worth, there is no doubt the Police handling of the crowd situation is 95% to blame for the deaths of innocent fans ...

    1258:

PM quote in full: ""The new evidence that we're presented with today makes clear in my view that these families have suffered a double injustice: the injustice of the appalling events, the failure of the state to protect their loved ones, and the indefensible wait to get the truth, and then the injustice of the denigration of the deceased - that they were somehow at fault for their own deaths. So on behalf of the government, and indeed our country, I am profoundly sorry that this double injustice has been left uncorrected for so long."

First up, I'm well known for making scathing attacks upon liverpol football club, is fans and indeed every inhabitant of the city. However, when it comes to this issue i'm 100% behind the families. Somew of the things printed in the aftermath and the wait to get to the truth has been an absolute disgrace.

I don't know what Cameron is going on about though when he says people said the dead were responsible for their own deaths. Anyone who has implicated any of the Liverpool fans who were there that day has said they stormed the gates without tickets and caused the tragedy - nobody has ever pointed fingers at the victims themselves all of whom would have been in the stadium long before the disaster developed.

Anyway, if anyone owes the families an apology it's Maggie Thatcher whose blind hatred of football fans led her to develop policies in terms of policing and inadequate medical care along with those bloody awful cages in stadia that were directly responsible for this and very nearly caused more.
