Hill may consider his options if contract talks are not wrapped up in the next few weeks Clint Hill admits he could consider leaving QPR next month if negotiations over his contract extension are not wrapped up as quickly as possible. Hillâs current deal expires next summer, and the 33-year-old defender, who signed from Crystal Palace 18 months ago, is keen to extend his stay at Loftus Road. But with first-choice left-back Armand Traore set to depart to the Africa Cup of Nations in January Neil Warnock plans to bring in defensive reinforcements, and Hill admits he may be forced to seek a move away from the club. âIâm waiting to see what they do, if they want to keep me then great because I would love to stay,â said Hill, who has forced his way back into Warnockâs plans after spending the early weeks of the season on loan with Nottingham Forest. âBut I need to find out as soon as possible if Iâm going to get the extra contract or not because Januaryâs almost here. âYou have to assess it. Iâm not getting any younger and Iâm not in the team. I need to be playing at my age but if they offer me a contract, brilliant. âI feel Iâve done okay, but itâs up to others to decide if Iâve deserved a contract or not.â While Hill concedes his opportunities for first-team football have been limited this season, he is determined to stay and help the club in their fight to avoid relegation. Rangers host Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, and the veteran defender says they will have to improve on their performance against Liverpool last weekend if they are to take anything from the champions. âOur first objective for the season is survival, if we can finish fourth from bottom that will be a good season for us,â added Hill. âWe know we can play better. We didnât keep the ball as well as we could [against Liverpool] and we didnât create enough chances. âWe donât fear anyone â weâre enjoying being in this league. Weâre still naive in the sense that weâre a young team in the Premier League. We will make mistakes and get punished for them. But at home we feel confident we can give anyone a game. âThere are no easy games and a point here and there adds up. We need to score more goals and keep them out, theyâre the simple ingredients. âIf you get to 40 points and go down thatâs very unlucky. Hopefully weâll get to that mark and when we do hopefully weâll get a few more points. Itâs going to be a long, hard season but hopefully we can do it.â Follow me on Twitter @QPRTimes iReader http://www.london24.com/sport/champ...ar_admits_he_could_leave_in_january_1_1152994
Football is a strange business these days isn't it? Hill has 6 months left to run on his contract but here is the implied threat of 'considering options' if he isn't handed a new contract immediately. With Traore gone for a month we will be in desperate need of cover but its hard to see why that means we would want to renew with him for the longer term. So, why wouldn't we just make use of his remaining contract period and see where we are next summer? Will he do a Tevez if he doesn't get a new deal? Don't get me wrong, I think Clint has been a stalwart for us in the last 18 months but the principle of professionals needing to honour their contracts seems to be going out the window in the modern game.
Clint may well "demand" a new contract, but called me old fashioned, shouldn't he have to earn it by having a few (20 plus) faultless displays between now and end of season?
Tough one. I think the reality is we need him for the rest of the season but not beyond. So how do we ensure he puts in 100% without a new contract?
catch 22 situation...personally think we should sign him up for another season. Good player to have in the trenches, and useful backup in defence.. Stan
