Steven Gerrard says England can produce World Cup "miracle"
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19510225

Brilliant. At Euro 2012 it was Rooney, now it's Gerrard.

Just for once I'd like an England player to stand up before a major tournament and say "No, we are not going to win it. We haven't reached a semi final since 1996, so let's stop talking about winning the thing and just focus on not embarrassing ourselves.

To be fair to Gerrard he's not as tub thumping as he was in 2006, and admits it would take a miracle. But I can't believe anyone is even talking about it at this stage.

These players need to keep their mouths shut about these kind of things. They make these kind of statements then have a shocking tournament and then wonder why the fans lambast them.

England can win the World Cup in 2014. Just like Liverpool can win the Premiership, and Arsenal can hit top form post-March every season.

I must admit i grimaced when I saw the article. At least Charlton is being a bit more realisic.

In any event we shouldn't really be making statements either way 2 years before the event, yes we want to qualify well but, to be honest at this point I couldn't care less, theres club football to worry about.

For once I agree with you. Its about time they shut the **** up, and started performing instead of mouthing. Its cringeworthy.

I'd say SG is more likely to win the World Cup than the Prem

Do you really think the players are given licence to say what they're thinking?

Well, Gerrard wasn't giving the press conference on Twitter, was he?

But I see your point - although I'd actually rather footballers spoke their minds than reel off the usual 'love the club, big club, best fans' ****e.

What do you expect? It's in his DNA. He is a f**king scousers player isn't he? The scousers are known for their unrealistic optimism. Every year it will be their year for the title ....<ok>

Reckon its time clubs ban players from using Twitter because it has caused more controversy than good.

You can't ban people from it, that's a little totalitarian for my tastes.

Fine them wages if they cause disrepute, sure.
