Could anyone remind me when Henry became AFC captain and what was the situation? Was it to convince him to stay? Thanks.
No disrespect intended, but Henry is a ****ING LEGEND and for good reason. Have you ever watched him play EmirAleks?
No disrespect but I would much prefer an answer to your lecturing from San Diego. Something tells me I watched TH14 playing at Highbury more often than you buddy. I know who he is, I just do not rememeber the situation around his captaincy. Was his departure already on the cards at that moment? As I remeember, Arsene asked him to stay for another season and THEN made him captain. Correct me if I am wrong.
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't that Gallas you are thinking of? Gallas was unhappy so they gave him the captaincy to shut him up.
I don't remember it being about that, he was just the natural choice after Viera left the role vacant. I could imagine there being such rumours at the time though...
It was given to him for the same reason (according to the media) as RVP and Fab to keep him. I think if we didn't lose, the way we did, to Barca in that CL final he would have gone that year. He was really pissed at the end of the game which I think made him stay another year. Think he was given it because he was our best player - no other reason. Only a ****** would stay at a club he wants to leave for the captaincy. Most useless/****/meaningless position in football.
Henry was never captain material, the looks he used to give our players when they did anything wrong was of pure disdain. Poor Reyes used to get that look every time. He was clearly made captain because he was our best player and led by performance.
Well, I do not know about football as such, but after Vieira it is certainly the case with Arsenal. As a result we now have Vermaelen-who-is-substituted-by-Arteta-who-is-substituted-by-Mertesaker-who-looks-like-the-real-captain captain situation. I only hope that somewhere in the futue Jack will restore the great tradition of AFC captains. If he quits smoking, that is. It may be meaningless, but, let us be honest - it was indicative of the situation in the club. Lets hope this difficult time is in the past.
Well even when Vermaelen was playing he never really felt like the Captain, it was all Arteta. Which is why I agree it's a useless position to a degree. It won't convert a natural non-leader to a leader, and it won't stop a leader (a la Flamini, Arteta, Merts) from shouting orders just because they don't have the title.
