Young forward Luís Semedo, now known as Luís Hemir, hasn’t forgot about Sunderland in the first months of his loan spell in Portugal.

After half a year without playing, Luís Hemir made his debut for Moreirense at the beginning of the month and has played in two matches as a substitute, against FC Arouca and SC Braga.

Recovered from physical problems, his objective is to “seek a place in the pitch” to help his team, currently sixth in the championship. As he revealed to local outlet TSF, he wants to “secure their survival” as quickly as possible, before thinking about higher goals.

Still have an eye out for Sunderland

However, he doesn’t regret not being in the Black Cats’ squad this season. “I wish my team all the success, since I’m still a Sunderland player, but I have to focus on where I am and give my 100% for Moreirense”, he said.

Still, he’s following Sunderland’s surprising run from afar, currently fourth in the Premier League. “It has truly been an excellent journey and they are very well-prepared. The coach is good and they are in good shape.”

Asked if his time at Moreirense could be important for a possible return to Sunderland, he confirmed that this thought lives in his mind. “Yes. As I said, I prefer to always think day by day, game by game, and always try to do my best. Then, when the time comes to make decisions, I choose my own future”, he stressed.

    Plans for the future

He says he returned to Portuguese football to show the quality he possesses, after two difficult years, but his aspirations go far beyond that in a long-term perspective. “I still have some goals, and that’s why I fight every day. Obviously, I also want to play at another level, the Champions League level, and one day reach the national team. I believe that one day I will achieve them.”

He’s yet to feature in the scoresheet for Moreirense so far, but he has a long season ahead of him, and surely he’s keen on returning to Sunderland as a better player, prepared to live the hype that brought him to England in 2023.
