Leeds United v Sunderland 9th April 2024 at Elland Road please log in to view this image After our defeat to Coventry, the stomach churning was already starting before the game. Whatever happens on the pitch is out of our control and all we as fans can do, is get behind the team as we did in the second half. It was nice to see our Maltese fans amongst others before the game and thank you to Leonard for buying one of my books. Team: Meslier, Ampadu (captain), Rodon, Gray, Kamara, Rutter, Summerville, Bamford, Firpo, Gruev, James. Subs: Gnonto for Kamara (71), Piroe for Bamford (82), Joseph for James (82), Roberts for Gray (82). Subs not used: Darlow, Cooper, Cresswell, Anthony, Byram. Score: a nil-nil draw. Attendance: 36,793 with approximately 2,900 Sunderland fans. Referee: Tim Robinson. Booked: Kamara, Firpo. Not sure what happened here as Firpo committed the foul, but the card was shown to Kamara before Firpo was booked. It certainly made a talking point on the terraces as at first, I thought I’d been seeing things. On a rare occasion, Leeds found themselves turned around to play towards the Kop in the first half. Rutter had a long range shot that went wide then Summerville got into a good position that went wide of the post. Meslier was the first keeper to make a save as Leeds were kept on their toes when Sunderland got into the penalty area and Ampadu got the ball away. There were some strong challenges from Sunderland which resulted in a booking after the third one from their number five. Meslier made a full stretch save to keep the score level. The nearest Leeds came to a goal was when Gnonto’s shot hit a Sunderland defender and the ball looped over the crossbar and Summerville took a free kick from the left of the goal which hit the side of the goal. Although Leeds called for a penalty for handball, the referee waved play on. Everyone around us couldn’t believe there were only three minutes of injury time to play in the second half especially with their keeper timewasting and with the number of subs made. That said, I don’t think it would have made any difference to the final score. We remain unbeaten at Elland Road, but it was a frustrating game to watch. Numerous times we attacked down the left-hand side of the pitch when we could have used both sides, which meant Gray and James were left out in the cold more often than not. We were slow to come out of defence at first but then our passing became crisper but in reality, we didn’t put their keeper under any pressure today. One point is better than none, but I still feel the promotion race will go until the last game. We have another game at Elland Road with the early kick off against Blackburn on Saturday so see you then. The Galway whites are a fired looking bunch and that was before the game. I’ll be curious to read their comments later. Your chances of a memorable trip to Wembley are increasing with every game Heidi
