This is Part one in a series (if I can be bothered to do more) of players who played for us reasonably recently, but have been quickly forgotten. First up... Djamel Belmadi please log in to view this image Remarkably, he made 36 appearances for Saints, most from the bench. Taken on by Redknapp in one of his typical "give 25 players a trial, one of them might be good" ideas. Belmadi scored 4 times, 3 in the league against Crewe, Stoke & Norwich. Once in the league cup at Millwall. A number of injury problems held him back from being a fixture in the team, which was a shame as when he did play, he had great movement and and an eye for a pass and played well coming off the bench in Saints ill-fated play off game at Derby. He left Saints in the summer of 2007, playing a couple of seasons in France before retiring. He now manages Lekhwiya SC in Qatar, winning the league in his first season. His new club has spent a lot of money acquiring the likes of Dindane & Madjic Bougherra recently.
I was struggling to remember his goals, but was it a curling effort from outside the area? or a half-volley from inside?
I remember him being very good when he played, however injury prevented him from ever making a career for himself at Saints. He was a useful player, probably one of our best at the time.
You're got your work cut out there CBK, there must be about 70-100 players to choose from in that era.
well, i like to change my birthday every year jkes a player of another club sharing my birthday doesnt mean anything to me anymore
Leonardo Da Vinci (left winger, Fiorentina) and my good self share a birthday, he's a bit older...........
Half of those won't have had enough time in a Saints shirt to even have photographic evidence to instantly prove it.
He always reminded me a bit of Eyal Berkovic in his style of play, good technique and great vision with a good shot too.
I always liked him , had something about him a bit of creativity amongst the dross that Redknapp saddled us with at the time shame he was always injured
I remembered him more of a Man City player - I just found out he only played 8 times for them! So I am surprised he played 36 times for us (second only in his career to the 48 times for Marseille) Must have always been hampered by injury, because (as said) he was a good player
