FROM knockout blows to Wembley hammer blows, with a teenage dream realised and a dramatic derby finale thrown into the mix, 2014 has proved to be a memorable year for local sport.

With the Mail’s annual Sporting Champions awards set to take place a week today, now is your chance to crown the winners as we look to acknowledge the sporting highlights of the past 12 months.

While the region’s best young talent will be recognised at next week’s award ceremony at the KC Stadium in front of an audience of elite sporting talent, we also want your help in choosing which of our professional stars should be honoured.

The Sporting Champions Professional Moment of the Year awards will be handed out to the best individual and the best team achievement with the voting process already open.

In the individual category, boxing stars Tommy Coyle and Curtis Woodhouse go head-to-head alongside teenage Hull FC’s Callum Lancaster.

Winger Lancaster grabbed a hat-trick in only his third-ever professional game as Hull ran up their biggest win of the season at Widnes.

Star of the show was 17-year-old winger Lancaster who, a week after scoring a double at London, picked up his first Super League hat-trick with a breath-taking display.

Up against Lancaster is Coyle, who before his second-round win over Michael Katsidis last weekend was involved in the fight of the year against Daniel Brizuela.

Few had heard of Argentinian Brizuela when he arrived at the Hull Arena to compete with Coyle for his IBF International lightweight title.

The diminutive boxer had a good record, though, and when he sent Coyle to the canvas in the second round with a terrific body shot the home favourite looked in trouble.

Two further knock downs in the sixth and a fourth visit to the canvas in the 11th had Coyle set for defeat but, roared on by a deafening support, the Hull boxer had Brizuela down three times himself.

A fight nobody will ever forget ended in the final round as Coyle stopped his stubborn opponent.

On arguably the greatest night of boxing Hull has ever seen, Woodhouse fulfilled a promise to his father and silenced the critics by becoming British light-welterweight champion.

The former Premier League footballer-turned-boxer had already enjoyed a remarkable career inside the ring prior to a night that would define his legacy.

An English title triumph and defeat in his shot at the Commonwealth crown were further than most go, but on February 22, Woodhouse would realise a lifetime’s ambition by landing the Lonsdale Belt with a points victory over champion Darren Hamilton.

While boxing dominates the individual category, it’s Hull City’s remarkable campaign which sees them boast three of the five nominations in the team award.

On May 17, the eyes of the football world were on Wembley as something incredible was happening.

Hull City, a club not so long from going out of existence, were beating Arsenal 2-0 in the FA Cup final with goals from James Chester and Curtis Davies.

While Arsenal came back to break City’s hearts, the occasion will never be forgotten.

That event may be many people’s favourite to vote for, but a 5-3 semi-final Wembley win over Sheffield United is also sure to stir emotions.

As will the Tigers beating Liverpool for the first time in 17 attempts thanks to a 3-1 success at the KC Stadium that shocked the title hopefuls.

Jake Livermore put the hosts ahead on 20 minutes before Steven Gerrard equalised, before David Meyler’s second-half strike and a late Martin Skrtel own goal in the 87th minute delivered the win.

It’s not all about football, though. Having racked up five straight wins, Hull Stingrays were chasing a club-record sixth victory in a row against Dundee Stars.

They fell behind to Nikita Kashirsky’s strike, but Guillaume Doucet levelled for 1-1 before Nico Sacchetti restored Stars’ lead in the second period.

Three goals in the last 10 minutes from Sylvain Cloutier, Omar Pacha and Pavel Gomeniuk sealed a memorable 4-2 win to break new ground.

And what list would be complete without a derby moment for one half of the city to savour, at least? When Hull FC and Hull KR met for the first time in Super League in 2014, optimism was still high regarding what the season may bring.

An encounter dominated by the Robins didn’t bring the rewards the hosts had anticipated at the KC Lightstream Stadium as FC stubbornly clawed their way back.

A draw seemed on the cards, but with 45 seconds remaining, Craig Hall popped up to slot over a drop goal to send the home fans wild.

To be fair, they couldn't look too football-biased, they had to pick something from a Rugby game... too bad that the local rugby teams are ****e. I picked the FA Cup Final.

Also, if anyone didn't pick Coyle's win over Brizuela for the individual award, then they are mental. Fight of the year that were. Though Woodhouse's win I suppose was pretty big too.
