David Haye's promises to knock-out Wladimir Klitschko and unify the heavyweight division unravelled in the ring on Saturday night.

The British boxer suffered a wide points defeat to the Ukrainian, who - in fairness to Haye - never came close to fulfilling his prediction that he would win by knockout either.

Haye battled hard against his taller opponent, but he effectively banked on secured the knockout from the outset, allowing Klitschko to win rounds comfortably with his consistent, if fairly comfortable, jab.

The points decision - 117-109, 118-108, 116-110 - allowed Klitschko to add Haye's WBA belt to his collection of WBO and IBF belts.

Haye's attempts to unsettle Klitschko - from the verbal abuse throughout the build-up to a 10-minute delay to his ring entrance - had little or no effect.

He could not get near to his opponent. Klitschko stayed outside Haye's shorter reach and prodded away with his jab to keep him at bay.

The Brit occasionally landed decent punches, but his attacks were often off-balance and at full-stretch as he tried to combat his opponent's greater reach.

Klitschko continued to jab and he landed with some big rights, maintaining a pace that Haye's pre-fight trash-talk suggested he didn't think he was capable of doing.

Haye revealed a broken toe, sustained three weeks ago, had hindered his balance as he attempted to land anything significant on Klitschko.
