It's becoming tiresome. We played VERY well last night. I seriously think that anyone who says we didn't wasn't watching the game. But what makes me angrier is the fact that we endlessly have this tirade of 'Wenger is crap" whenever we lose and "Good performance" when we win, but it's from the SAME PEOPLE! Since whining on a forum will do NOTHING, positivity is the only thing that can make you happy. So go on, be happy!
I think Wenger comes in for some unjustified criticism at times. Nothing wrong with criticising him if he's made glaring errors, but often it's a case of damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. I also think that he is best placed to know what is happening regarding, fitness of players, money available for transfers, available players that he could bring in etc. Far too often he is criticised for making decisions that in reality, people know little about. It's easy to sit on the outside and make judgements and offer solutions, far harder to actually be in the situation, knowing the intricate dymanics of a particular scenario - and then make the best all round decision. I'm sure Wenger would admit that he hasn't got everything right every time, but that's just being human, we all make mistakes. Overall though, I think he has done tremendously well and generally he gets it right. Given the circumstances at our club since our move from Highbury, I doubt any other manager other than Wenger would have been able to keep Arsenal consistently in the challenge for the title and the Champions League. Wenger dererves a lot of credit and a bit more respect from some of our fans.
Totally agree Piskie. Especially with these 2 statements: "Far too often he is criticised for making decisions that in reality, people know little about." "I doubt any other manager other than Wenger would have been able to keep Arsenal consistently in the challenge for the title and the Champions League."
Magic man, there was no real challenge in the past. Now, lots of teams have stepped up to the plate, in the past few seasons we scraped qualification. Before it was just Arsenal and Man U with no other challengers, then Chelsea joined the fun, then Liverpool, now City and Tottenham are here. Wenger was able to rest on his laurels .. now he can't and it is now we are seeing his deficiencies. the biggest problem I see is, we are not far off being where we need to be in terms of personnel and how we play, Wenger needs to be more decisive tactically and less rigid in his approach. Top managers adjust their teams to suit the opposition, Wenger relies on one style fits all.
Man U always have had more money and should expect more sucess when they have been buying £30M players for 10 years. Chelsea had 100's of £M's ploughed into them and then went and spent £50M last January. They had a couple of sucessful seasons. Man City have obviously bought all the best players (even if they then pay them to play for our rivals). I have yet to see any eveidence of how Liverpool and Tottenham are challenging yet. When was the last time we finished outside the top 4? When was the last time the spuds finished above us? Remember that the season is 38 league games long. Let's see where we are in a few months. My best guess is that it will be above the spuds, Liverpool and possibly Chelsea. Please also don't forget that we were not that far off winning things last season. I firmly believe that we have a better squad than last year, although we could do with another striker.
In the former, he hasn't. Best placed 4th. Once. Currently OK, but there is no way that will last. Also helped by Man Citeh paying their main scorers wages. In the latter, because he is quite simply one of the best managers the World has ever seen. Plus, he get's to buy £30M players regularly over the past decade.
Yes Utd have spent in their means. Hence why we built a new stadium to try to compete. When it is fully paid off, we may have been able to. Now, who knows with billionaire owners throwing money away. Redknapp has done it once in his career. I doubt it will happen again. Certainly not this year. Wenger has done it consistently. Those are the facts. The rest of your comment is subjecture.
'arry won the FA Cup with Portsmouth and then they nearly went bankrupt. Now that's what i call success
God I hate it when I find myself (mostly) agreeing with Jayram Back on topic, who are these Janus-faced individuals? Name names, NAME & SHAME!
Wenger is an enigma because he's potentially the very best manager out there but its his own sense of ethics that let him down. 1.He wants to win trophies ..but it has to be achieved through playing a certain way. 2.Sets up the largest most advance scouting network in world football .. but will only buy if he can get a player for a bargain price. 3.Admits the team needs more experience.. then lets established players leave and replaces them with youth. I could go on..
I am not saying that we cannot compete finacially now, but we cannot compete with Citeh. We could certainly spend more and I'd love another striker. What I was saying is that we built the stadium (& paid for it) in order to be able to compete with Man U. Now with the billions thrown around, it's gone to another level. I did not suggest that "no other manager could have done a better than Wenger", but you have stated "I believe there are plenty of managers who would have not only kept us there, but won a league title in that time." I disagree. But please feel freee to name 'plenty' who could have done a better job, with the board and profile that we have. Plus, (can't be arsed to find links) but pretty sure the spuds have spent far more than us over the last 10 years and always fallen behind us. Your beloved 'arry likes to spend a bob or two and they still haven't bettered us in recent history.
By the way, Spurs do have financial muscle, they have one of the richest owners / boards in the PL and they have consistently spent huge amounts of money, and still finished below us. Perhaps throwing piles of cash at it isn't necessarily the magic formula!!
Ha Ha, its 13 games in to a 38 game season, plus they have consistently spent more than us over the last decade (I'll leave you to look up the figures) and City are paying the majority of the wages of their top striker!! Dont make me laugh Jayram.
Once again source please Jayram, unless you broke into their offices and saw the confidential wage figures of both teams over the last 10 years.
Yes I agree our wages are higher commensurate with the relative size of the 2 clubs. I believe you are an advocate of spending on the team and paying good enough wages to attract and keep the best players. I dont believe your figures where you say we have spent 40 mill more a year even after spending on transfer fees are taken into account. However even if its anything like that it shows in quality and league position over the last decade!!
