Anyone else notice the guys throwing the smoke bombs on Saturday in the Saints away end. Pretty pathetic really. I expect they'll be more being thrown on future away games and possibly home games. I think they got the idea from the Chelsea fans at the FA Cup game. So really they're just children trying to copy the "cool" kids who they saw doing it first.

They were just by me and definitely not "guys" but chavy kids really. It seemed pretty dumb as they were so poor at throwing them they were just landing on the saints fans below - I know I'd be pissed if one of them landed on me.

Chelsea are taking it seriously, their fan who threw a smoke grenade on the pitch at St. M has been charged for the offence.

    WARNING REGARDING SUPPORTER BEHAVIOUR

Posted on: Wed 09 Jan 2013

Chelsea Football Club reminds our supporters that taking flares, smoke bombs or anything similar into a stadium breaches Ground Regulations and using such objects is likely to result in arrest. Their use is extremely dangerous and risks serious injury to fellow fans.

Unfortunately there has been an increase in incidents involving flares and smoke bombs in recent weeks and as well as fans facing prosecution, the club is liable to be charged by the authorities should this behaviour continue.

Anyone choosing to break the law regarding flares and smoke bombs at football matches runs a high risk of being caught. During the FA Cup game at Southampton, a person in the Chelsea section of the stadium was arrested and charged with throwing a flare onto the pitch.

At our away Capital One Cup match at Swansea later this month, South Wales Police will be using dogs in the area of the turnstiles to detect fans carrying such objects. Should any arrest result in conviction then Chelsea FC will support the police in every possible way to obtain a football banning order.

The club, the players and the management greatly appreciate the large number of fans and the vocal support which have backed the team this season, but we ask for good behaviour to be maintained. Please don't risk a criminal conviction and banning order, or the club being charged with an offence, for the sake of a flare, smoke bomb or firework.

As far as I am concerned it is plain stupid to even think about it, apart from the perceived dangers, these devices have properties in them that can cause serious problems for asthmatics, please be sensible, it ain't Saintly.

Unfortunately there is always an element that promotes the opinion that such things don't hurt people. All I can say is that these people have not had the experience of some Plymouth fans some time ago. For the life of me I cannot remember whether it was Exeter or one of the Bristol clubs that was visiting Plymouth at the time.
A Plymouth fan threw a flare from somewhere towards the rear towards the away fan section as they were leaving the ground. It looped into the air and landed in the hood of a supporters coat....just as he was pulling the hood over his head. Needless to say the lad was really badly burned, as was his girlfriend beside him and one of my colleagues who was trying to get the well alight coat off him to save his life.
To be honest to this day we are not certain as to whether we did the right thing in saving his life. The scaring of his face was on a par with that lad, that copt it in the Falklands war. Remember though this was the early sixties and while they had a lot of experience with burns learned during the world war it wasn't as up to-date as it was in the eighties some twenty odd years later.........
So No......... throwing Flares and smoke bombs is not funny, you may not mean to hurt anyone, you may think it is a laugh. It isn't trust me when someone gets hurt because of your stupidity............

I was at the game with my wife and one of the smoke bombs did land very close to us in the lower tier, it was a bit disconcerting even though I quickly realised it was a smoke bomb, but my wife was very concerned and became quite distressed thinking that there was a fire. It was definately a very negative experience to an otherwise very enjoyable day.

How come children are allowed to buy these things?

anybody that takes flares/fireworks or any sort of flame inside a football ground should get a custodial sentence.

I like them, No harm at all and add a little extra to the atmosphere. Tip to anyone ever using one, dont throw it into the crowd, just set it off and throw it on the floor, firstly its dangerous when being thrown as it can brake upon impact and the chemicals arnt very nice, and also its very hard to get caught if you just leave it by you, as they cant see who's set it off and you can say someone else threw it

Been going on for years, but has become something of "thing" amongst the "yoof" apparently.

But as its the UK, we do it in quite a lame way, normally because whoever lets if off wants to get shot of it immediately before being captured on CCTV.

Whereas in Europe, they do it properly because they don't get frogmarched out the ground and its done in areas of the ground where there are no people of a sensitive disposition

AIK fans did it superbly a few weeks ago for the last ever game in their old stadium:

sort of makes a spotty teenager throwing a little smoke bomb at Villa Park (or a chelsea fan at SMS) look rather sad.

I have asthma - it's not exactly my cup of tea for someone to set one of these off near me!

Some people don't like them but I like it an like north London saints says adds something extra tothe atmosphere but only as long as their not thrown. They are on the rise in England Liverpool set one off at united yesterday and we can't really complain as they were set off at both Pompey games by us and Coventry one of which was an actual flare.

Flares are completely different and are actually dangerous, can cause fire and severe burning, Its like letting off a firework in a stadium

I think they can look quite good, for example in the photos above, but throwing them seems beyond stupid. If one was to calmly place one on the ground, make a bit of space for it and then let it off.... Then that'd be quite good and wouldn't be a problem I guess. Maybe they could have a particular part of a stadium where you can set them off so people with asthma could avoid them. I enjoyed the flares that were let off at the derby last season.

oldest one I can remember seeing was at Wembley for the ZDS final in 1992. Someone behind the goal threw one after Le Tiss's goal
