With the passing of the former rangers football club, now in liquidation has the exciting CLGS games replaced the now defunct and impossible to revive OF games. Even if the new club do make it to the end of the season, by mortgaging Ibrox and mp, and then eventually make their first appearance in the SPFL could the games the provide, given the transfer of the fans of the now defunct rfc to SEVCO, ever supplant the excitement and anticipation felt by Celtic fans over games against Milan, Barcelona and Ajax, three historical giants of European football, as opposed to a tribute act without any historical rivalry with the most successful existing club in football in Scotland. It has happened previously. Initially, celtics great rivalry as the banner carriers for professionalism in Scottish football, was rivalled by the pre-eminent supporters of amateur football, Queens Park. As professionalism clearly outpaced the amateur approach, the rivalry died due to lack of competition between the two. With SEVCO, if the make it to SPFL they would be handicapped by Wonga dot com type mortgage payments annually sucking half to three quarters of their income, thus making it difficult for the new entity, despite the following of the former rfc transplanting themselves, to compete even with Aberdeen etc. Lack of success especially against Celtic, whom the hoards perceive as their arch rivals would quickly diminish their fan base. Meanwhile, Celtic could be competing n an annual basis with the biggest clubs in Europe. Will the excessive annual running costs of Scotland's newest clubs result in them eventually going the way of Third Lanark or Gretna. What force could assist the new club to compete with the top six SPFL clubs?
I believe the Champions League games are what Celtic supporters now need... missing out on CL would be disastrous in terms of drawing a crowd to CP (and the obvious financial benefits). European football is a must, and it needs to be CL... Europa League is ok, but I'd only really care if Celtic made it to quarters of EL. I don’t think the OF can be revived - even though Pistol Pete still refers to the OF "brand - but games against them, when Rangers make it to the Premiership, will be fiercely contested (by the fans at first then by the teams if Rangers can end up making money/building a team). Most fans, in my opinion, will see it is a return to the old ways and will treat it as an Old Firm game... Me, it won’t necessary be an Old Firm game but will still be Celtic v Rangers and I will still want to see us beat them in every competition possible… as I did before.
The champions league has always been better than the old firm. Its the top competition and where we should be aiming for every year. You get far more recognition from European football than winning the Scottish league.
From who do you receive this 'recognition' from? Unless you are a regular quarter finalist, you are nothing in European terms. No **** gives a **** about Scottish football. Sorry to burst yer bobble, Eric.
From the world of football. By playing in the champions league we are able to attract better players to our club.
FFS, Edge, don't you know Celtic invented free flowing attacking football? It's known worldwide that is. Loved across the globe they are.
Unlike Huns FC, there are tens of thousands of Celtic fans around the world who care. Pretty obvious really.
