Has Nathaniel Clyne broken Liverpool’s Southampton hoodoo?

    • Daily Mail) to prise Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and most recently Nathaniel Clyne away from the South Coast club.
But despite the Northern Irishman’s propensity to raid Ronald Koeman’s playing ranks in recent times, it’s fair to say that his strategy hasn’t really gone to plan so far.
Liverpool 1-0 Bournemouth match ratings: Benteke and Clyne impress
The trio of Lovren, Lallana and Lambert all failed to deliver to the expected standard last term after joining in 2014, with the latter since having been sold to West Brom, after mustering just two Premier League strikes.
Although both Lovren and Lallana have been retained, they have plenty of work to do to convince Liverpool fans of their worth, despite having both started Liverpool’s first two games this season.
After Liverpool’s impressive, but ultimately unsuccessful title challenge in the 2013-14 season, Rodgers identified Lovren as the man to shore up a leaky defence that, instead of Steven Gerrard’s untimely slip, was ultimately to blame for their late title title collapse.
The Croatian defender, who had impressed as an imposing and authoritative defender in his single season at St Mary’s, appeared a shrinking violet under the bright lights of Anfield, however, making six defensive errors in the Premier League, second only to QPR goalkeeper Robert Green across the whole top flight.
Lallana didn’t endure quite such a disastrous campaign, registering five goals and three assists in 27 appearances, but after being named in the PFA Team of the Year for his efforts in 2013-14, he was expected to provide a much more consistent attacking threat.

A not too unfamiliar position for Lovren and Lallana last season – on the substitutes bench.
So far Rodgers has kept the faith with the pair and although Lovren has looked more solid in their opening fixtures, Lallana has struggled to make a significant impact and was criticised for his display on Monday night.
Given his former team-mates’ strife at Liverpool, Nathaniel Clyne could have been forgiven for avoiding a move to Anfield like the plague. However, the England right-back has excelled in both his games for the Reds and despite arriving 12 months after his former colleagues, he appears to be the most likely to become a Southampton-signing success story.
It’s no secret that Liverpool fans grew increasingly exasperated by Glen Johnson’s erratic displays at right-back over the last couple of seasons and it appears as though his replacement has got the seal of approval from the Anfield support so far.

He's been very good in the first two games. Let's hope that continues.

He's been brilliant defensively which is the main thing. Still expecting to see more from him going forward.

£12.5m could be prove to be a bargain.

Hes the only Soton player I wanted and the only one we should have signed. Lambert wasn't a huge risk for the price but the other two were extremely bad moves.

It's still early days but Clyne looks a brilliant buy.

Out of all the Soton lads - I would have taken Shaw, Clyne, Wanyama and Schneiderlin - with the latter 3 going straight into our first team.

I was sceptical. Didn't think his defending was all that but been proven wrong so far (still early days). He's looked very good, comfortable on the ball, strong in defence and nice burst of pace going forward. Made a couple of great runs on Monday, need to see more form ghim going forward but give it time and I'm sure he'll she his attacking prowess.
