I was thinking about starting up a poll that would eventually give us our ultimate WFC team. Starting with goalkeepers on the first day, then Right Back, left back etc etc through to centre forward. This would prob take 2 to 3 weeks for us to get there but it would be a good debate for each position and although we may not all agree the majority wins and it should get some good debate going during the season break..... As I am new to the site this may have already been done, so before I waste your time do you think its a good idea or not? ..... I was going to start with manager but I think its a waste of time! Mr Graham Taylor will always get the vote over all .......
I would suggest that it has been done many times before and you will never get to the 'ultimate WFC team'. For example would Cliff Holton get into this team, given that he played all his games for the club in Division 3 (League 1 now)? How many members of the 82-83 team would not get into the 'ultimate' team, given that they finished higher than any other Watford team in history? Helguson versus Billy Jennings anyone? But, this should not stop us from trying: Goalkeeper - must be Coton over Jennings & Rankin with Sherwood & Chamberlain distant 4th & 5th
We have done similar.... but think they have normally been one thread for the whole team rather than voting for each position at a time!! It's a good idea and can't see why it wouldn't work. We will have varying opinions, varyng on age of the supporter, myself mainly being from early/mid-80s onwards!!
maybe we should start each thread with a suggestion of players to get in the top 8 and then we can vote from there on .... Goalkeepers for me : Coton, Sherwood, Foster, Miller, Pat jennings (maybe, never saw him play but I think it was for a season or 2), Chamberlain, James .... any others that should be in the top 8? Dont need to vote yet as I will do a proper poll if more agree its a good idea ...
Yeah, listing a top 8 or so would be about right... I guess it will have to be best player when he was at Watford rather than someone who was briefly with us but have done better things elsewhere....
I don't mind joining in! When it comes to manager only a mere few have achieved the magic of promotion, clearly GT's 5 separate promotions is beyond comparison. A friend of mine once said AB was the best ever, but I had to remind him about GT's total achievement. He later denied his assertion! Ken Furphy deserves an honorary mention.
For my part, and I can only speak of players I have seen, I would go with; David James, Kevin Miller, Alec Chamberlain, Ben Foster, and Perry Digweed. Ok, I was only joking about Digweed. Most of the best keepers we've had were from before my time unfortunately.
