Can't see another fred, maybe I've missed something? Wouldn't be the first time. Anyway, who's been watching this? In spite of a fairly intense dislike of former P*mpey manager and all round chiselling shyster Harry "The Spiv" Redknapp, I'm finding it all quite entertaining. And the most entertaining thing is, these guys are in such ****ing dreadful shape, I mean they make me look like someone who's looked after himself in comparison (I really haven't). Quite reassuring, that. Matt Letissier doesn't run a yard, but then he never did. Merson still has a touch of class. Apart from that, they don't just look like a pub team - they look like the sort of pub team that does all their training in the bar. Good stuff lads If the current generation of young England players have similar habits to this lot, forget them ever winning anything.
I’ve watched it and it’s not really been what I expected tbh. The opening up about the various issues these ex players have either been through or are still fighting, has been very candid and it’s made it more than just a load of middle aged fat blokes going on tour.
Yeah it’s great. Amazing Ruddock isn’t dead really and don’t think his wife comes out of it well (wid btw) basically going out on the piss with him. Feel for Merson who does his best while coping well with his own issues. His book is brilliant. Another one really beating the odds to be alive. Then they meet Robert Pires and he’s not gained a pound.
Is that the same wife, that had a meltdown on Can't pay, we'll take it away.? I don't like Ruddock, he comes across like a typical loudmouth bully.
He’s a funny bloke. A bit of a manchild. **** knows what he’d have done if he hadn’t been a footballer. What did they have taken away?
Ruddock weighed in at 159 kilos. That’s about 23 stone, which is a life threatening weight. They’re all trying to tell him that on the show, but I wonder how many people in his real life look him in the eyes and tell him he’s killing himself? Probably some people have, but he doesn’t want to hear it.
Watching the second episode now. Merson is one of the three fittest members of the squad. Absolute freak of nature.
I work with a bloke who played for West Ham when Ruddock and Redknapp were there. Some of the stories he has are pretty good. Let’s just say Ruddock was never one for keeping in shape
It was the story he told about Alan Shearer’s toe that got me. A teenage Shearer on England duty, left with a lacerated toe after running through glass, and everyone, coaches included, was too pissed to take him to hospital. And we wonder why England never win anything.
Merson’s story about living with Gazza and gambling over who could stay awake longest while taking increasing numbers of sleeping tablets and red wine might go some way to explaining our football culture.
He hadn't paid dog care bills, his wife is a real charmer, struggle to have any sympathy for Ruddock he's had so many chances and offers of help but doesn't want to deal with it, he has young kids
Watching the last episode and after doing the whole thing with a load of fat 50-somethings Darius Vassell strolls in looking about 33 and probably still playing.
Always thought Vinnie Jones was a horrible ****, right nasty piece of work in fact. Not totally convinced he isn’t, but he showed another side to himself in episode 2, especially talking to Lee Hendrie about his depression.
Teddy Sheringham always comes across as a seriously cool dude......Remember watching him and Ruddock play for millwall in the late 80's.Both great player at the time.Terry Hurlock made Ruddock look like a fairy
Got quite emotional at the end there. England vs Germany will always matter, even when it involves a bunch of worn out old men with big bellies and dodgy backs. Those guys really are legends btw - even if only for the way their bad habits always grew to match their talents.
How **** was the black guy up front for Germany who apparently has only just retired if Mark Wright at 83 kept a clean sheet against him?
