Harry Redknapp admits Jermain Defoe could still join QPR in January

JERMAIN DEFOE could still end up at QPR despite the collapse of his £6.6m deadline-day move from Toronto.

By Paul Brown / Published 3rd September 2014

Rangers boss Harry Redknapp will go back in for the former England striker when the transfer window reopens.

Defoe had agreed terms to sign for QPR but his club pulled the plug at the last minute, leaving Rangers in the lurch.

Redknapp then diverted his attention to Liverpool misfit Fabio Borini but that move also collapsed over his wage demands.

Rangers also failed with a late bid to bring in veteran free agent Hugo Almeida yesterday, but Redknapp is not giving up on Defoe.

“I have signed him so many times. I took him everywhere”

    Harry Redknapp

He said: "There is every chance he will come in January, I am a big fan of Jermain. I almost certainly will make another bid.

"I have signed him so many times. I took him everywhere. Defoe was the one we were looking to do all day.

"We agreed a deal with Jermain, that was easy, but Toronto told us they couldn't let him go now

This scenario actually works out quite well for all parties - allows Defoe to recover from current injury (early Oct?), then play for TFC in MLS for a couple of months, with possibility of playoffs, to hopefully regain match fitness before coming over to us in January.

Or likely I'm afraid, get injured again. He had a few I think later on at Spurs, but has been out a lot in Toronto, he's blaming that on the synthetic ptches. With OBZ only able to play parts of games it seems, I'd prefer we found someone younger and less liable to injury than Defoe. We have got 4 months now.

Perhaps we could patch together a decent striker by combining body parts from Zamora and Defoe?

Here they are together in more youthful days + Jermaine Jenas:-

Jermain Defoe wants out of Toronto: report - Daily Mail says England striker set to open negotiations

    Comments on story:-

"He probably misses warm beer and cold houses. That's the problem with Canada, we've got it all backwards."

"Bezbatchenko has a lot to answer for. Defoe back to Blighty, QPR and Harry."

"It's a bloody big deal! Man, TFC mishandled its affairs and Dafoe so badly!"

Toronto officials have previously denied reports that Jermain Defoe wants to leave, saying only the team turned down a club-record offer for the star striker at the end of the recent transfer window.

Jermain Defoe wants to quit Toronto and leave Major League Soccer, according to a British report.

The Daily Mail says the England striker is set to open negotiations with Toronto FC about exiting before the January transfer window.

Toronto officials have previously denied reports that their star acquisition wanted to leave, saying only the team turned down a club-record offer for Defoe at the end of the recent transfer window.

Defoe was linked to deadline day moves Monday to Queens Park Rangers and Leicester City.

The club stance is at odds with English reports and a source also told The Canadian Press that Defoe wants out. Defoe himself has not spoken publicly on his future and an email to his representative did not elicit a response.

Now the Daily Mail says the 31-year-old forward wants to return to England.

Toronto has a significant investment in Defoe since signing him from Tottenham in January. The striker is currently nursing a groin injury in England.

Harry Redknapp, manager of Queens Park Rangers, said Monday his team tried hard to pry Defoe free but was told Toronto would not give him up ahead of the MLS playoffs.

Redknapp, who worked with Defoe at West Ham, Portsmouth and Tottenham, said Defoe wants to return to England. Toronto GM Tim Bezbatchenko denied that, saying his star forward is happy in Toronto.

The Daily Telegraph reported earlier this week that Defoe is believed to be concerned he made a mistake by moving to MLS and that the standard of soccer is not as good as he had hoped. The paper added that Defoe has struggled to adapt to his new life and was upset at last weekend's firing of manager Ryan Nelsen and five members of his coaching staff.

Toronto (9-10-6) stands fourth in the Eastern Conference ahead of Saturday's game against visiting Philadelphia.

Toronto FC, less injured Defoe, just lost another game to Philadelphia Union (twice in 4 days) - not scoring any goals, one point in 5 games now, in danger of slipping out of a playoff spot.

At the match, this guy was spotted in the VIP area with Toronto FC owner, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd (MLSE) President, Tim Leiweke (who brought in Ryan Nelsen), who announced on 21 August 2014 that he was stepping down, but would remain in his position until 30 June 2015 or until a successor is appointed.
