....Reports Rich Cawley in the South London Press. Finances agreed, but still thrashing out the footballing side of things. Quotes from Powell confirming this. The most bizarre, inexplicable decision since Louis Walsh wandered into Spearmint Rhino.
Very surprised. I thought that when Roland said there were "Ongoing talks" about Lord P's contract he meant "He's getting sacked at the end of the season", which just proves what an old cynic I am. Let's hope Morrison is the first to follow suit.
The contract was ''agreed'' about a week ago. It might make some of the ''CP out brigade'' happy to know there seems to be a degree of stalling...
I notice that Eunoch Powell did not take too long in agreeing financial terms....I bet it was not a performance related rise. FFS what next giving Sordell a contract too?
As with other contracts, the board. It's what I've been referring to in regards to KM doing her part in the UK but not having much support from Belgium it seems. I think the excuse given to Cawley is very weak too. Honestly, the more the weeks pass, the more sceptical I grow about RD.
The ideal scenario is Powell stays until the end of the season, keeps us up whilst winning the FA Cup and Millwall appoint him to get them out of league 1, where he fails spectacularly. Do not want him in charge next season.
Who said he was getting a rise? Could be he figures he's damaged goods and couldn't go anywhere else so bit RD's hand off for a reduced deal in the hopes that something happens that restores his credibility. It's a bit like the Roman who was sentenced to death and said to the Emporer "will you spare me if I can make your horse talk?" The Emporer gave him a year. The Roman's friend asked why he had made the offer to which he replied" I may die naturally, the Emporer may die or...the horse may talk. Just buying time.
Before Jimmy & Captain log on and spit their dummies out, I too could live with CP staying for the rest of this season as the damage is done and realistically a new manager won't be able to sign his own players or turn things around in time. I hope he leaves with his head held high this summer. I will clap him off at Blackpool regardless of if we go down that day as he has been a good servant to the club. BUT.....I don't want him in charge next season. It is time for a new voice in our dugout after 3 years.
I can understand why Vol disagrees with the award of a new contract, but I don't think it's a 'bizarre and inexplicable' decision. I think, if indeed Powell does get a new contract, it will be because Roland recognises the good work he has done at Charlton since becoming manager in getting us out of League 1 and keeping us in the Championship last season. We have struggled this season, but it is not solely down to Powell's mistakes, and nor does it mean that Powell is a bad manager. I think it's good news.
Vol do you honestly believe our next manager will be signing his own players... I believe this is CP's sticking point in regards to discussing "footballing issues" further.
@ captain I have got to say that any award of a new contract to CP is down to sentimentality, and RM telling RD that there will be a Bovril Riot if he doesn't get one. The fact that CP is effectively demoted from manager to coach suggests that RD does not rate him, but hasn't got enough goodwill in the bank with fans to sack him.
No I don't The contract conversation between RD and Powell will be going something like this: RD: Bend over CP: How far, sir ?
That hasn't stopped him before, see here: http://www.theguardian.com/football...ton-athletic-roland-duchatelet-standard-liege (Yes, I know, but I did a Google search just now and this was the first article I found) If Roland thinks Powell isn't up it he would sack him/have sacked him by now/will sack him in the Summer. He wouldn't offer him a new contract.
Many things can & will be said about RD, but sentimentality is not one of them, nor will he be bothered about any "Bovril riot", you just got to look at what he's sat through in Belgium. No if CP gets a contract its because rightly or wrongly RD thinks he will do a good job in the structure he has set up. No sentimentality there guaranteed.
Normally I would agree with you but I don't on this occasion because I read: a. RD had been badly shaken by Belgian fan's hostile reaction to him sacking a "fan's favourite" b. I also read that Sir Dicky Murray had told RD just how much of a club legend the Club Legend really is (if you follow me) Some shrewd mind games are afoot. CP is effectively being constructively dismissed (albeit without a contract !) because RD will impose new Ts and Cs on him that he cannot accept. The thought of that horrible non entity Avram Grant joining us fills me with dread.
Am I reading this right, Vol the biggest "Powell out" drum banger would rather keep him than see him gone, with Avram Grant appearing from nowhere. At this rate we may win the FA Cup & stay up. wonders will never cease.
