Ten years ago today, we beat Cardiff 1-0 to secure our safety and send Leeds down http://www.ambernectar.org/blog/2017/04/nostalgia-a-decade-since-cardiff-away/
I forgot all about Nicky Forster, ye Gods he was a disappointment. McPhee was never really interested in football by the time he was with us. All he wanted to do was earn enough to pay for the house he was building in Florida. Dunno if he retired there as planned.
Great day, we were applauded out of Cardiff by their fans like a conquering army. There is more warmth and affection for Hull City in those few quotes from AP than in the whole of the Allams' wretched tenure.
McPhee became a youth coach at Blackpool, then Port Vale, but suffered from depression and tried to kill himself twice five years ago. There's a cheerful story to start the morning...
He scored 5 in 35, which wasn't a great goal return, but he was a very good player for us. Similar story to Jon Walters.
Very sorry to hear about McPhee's depression - I recall him as being a player with some potential but hampered by injuries. As for Nicky Forster, I'm firmly in the PLT camp on him. I think he was certainly close to the end of his career and was a bit past his best when he came to us but he was skilful and quick off the mark and his goals (although relatively few) were vital to us at the time.
It's funny, with hindsight, how that result ended up meaning nothing thanks to Leeds truly ****ing themselves over and going into administration just a few days later. Still a fantastic day though.
I wonder how many footballers struggle with it. Obviously years ago they drank to cope but nowadays they can't. So how do they cope.
Well it did, they went into administration because they'd been relegated. If they'd stayed up they probably wouldn't have at all, or certainly wouldn't have until the following season.
I seem to recall thinking they took the administration hit then precisely because they were going down though In that case the result caused the administration, or the timing of it anyway Either way it was bloody good
